I came across a very interesting statistic,

When was the last time a Republican Administration was elected president without a Nixon or Bush on the ticket?

just guessing--early 50's, Eisenhower?

I'd say Ford, but I don't think he was elected....he assumed the presidency when Nixon retired and didn't run for re-election, IIRC.

But hold on.....wasn't Eisenhower's vice president named Nixon? If by "on the ticket" you mean as a running partner, well, it'd be way further back.....probably back in the Great Depression era? If that's the case, well, Brian's right---longer than even I have been alive, and I'm older than aluminum foil!

Brian, I understand.

Jeff you are correct, it was 1928, when Hoover was elected, and like Nixon and Bush he rates well down on Presidential ratings. (there was that Depression)!!!!!

Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama.

Pick two good one, now pick two bad ones, get it.

Howard,

How can we forget about Reagan, who had a Bush on his ticket both times he ran!

This is the "Great Ronald Reagan" who grew government more than any other modern president except Bush II!

This is the "Great Ronald Reagan" who pushed through and signed the last amnesty bill giving amnesty to illegal aliens!

This is the "Great Ronald Reagan who signed the Brady Bill, the last major gun control bill!

This is the great Ronald Reagan who illegally sold arms to Iran!

Howard name your other "bad Republican"

Howard,

I like you and have enjoyed your hospitality, after re-reading my previous post I think I came across a little strong and I'm sorry.

Although I do think most conservatives tend to only remember Reagan as the great comunicator and forget what he really did. I bought my first home in 1982 and paid 19% interest. That was were the economy was in 1982.

I was just looking at the historical data....."post war"--after 1945--Republicans have held the White House for 36 years, Democrats have held the White House 28 (not counting Obama, I mean, he may not make it past today if an ex-friend has his way).

Admitting that each president has probably managed both positive and negative accomplishments, it looks like we can blame our current problems 43.75% on the Democrats and 56.25% on the Republicans.

Strange considering all the brouhaha over the Democratic handling of the economy and other issues, no :stunned: ?

Oh, and the "other" bad Republican had to be Nixon, one of the most hated politicians of all time. Surprisingly, I sort of liked him (a little) for his arrogance....he had absolutely NO reservations about eviscerating anyone who opposed him, I mean after all, he was the president and therefore entitled to do anything he pleased, right (loved the movie "Frost/Nixon", as well as the movie "W", for their honest portrayal of the ineptness of both presidents--both movies released in 2008, BTW)?

Oh, yeah, I guess that was a bit off, those unrestricted priveleges are reserved for dictators and Kings.....neither of which seems to be elected by democratic principles.

OT--Jim, love your signature line  !!!!

Doug,

I stole that line from the Bob Dylan song "My back pages", one of my all time favorites. The song goes: "Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now".

Disclosure: I probably lean left of center on most things, well significantly so on social issues, less on fiscal.

But, take a look at aggregate economic growth rates for Republican v. Democractic Presidents since 1945. It's pretty interesting, far more growth under Democrats.

Now, I certainly don't believe that ALL of that had to do with the fact that a Democrat was in the White House. But it is an itnereseting statistic nonetheless.

Discovery Channel has produced a great documentary series on the hardest major decisions that past presidents of the USA have had to make. Some of these were illegal under the strictest reading of the law, but each time the president's showcased in the feature presentation made a hard choice to protect the USA and it's allies.
I particurally liked the segments on Roosevelt in WWII and Regan during the final years of the Cold War with USSR. Both of them were vilified during their respective terms for violating the "popular" train of thought and did what they thought to be correct to insure peace and democracy. They used every conceivable trick in the book to keep their detractors at bay, even lying at times. (Heaven forbid! None of us has done that! Right?)
History has proven that they made the right assessment, even when they got some things wrong.
I think presidents that have humility toward their maker and a genuine love of their country have risen to the times in the past...not perfect but blessed with divine help in the darkest hours of the 20th century....regardless of political party.

Like I said, I'm *mostly* a Democract, and think some of the economic mess we saw from Reagan in teh 80s was MESS. BUT, I will give him and his administration this (and Bush I) -- they "managed" the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War masterfully. I'm not sure if we could have ended up better than we did, with Eastern Europe adopting democracies, Russian at least given democracy a go, of sorts, and no serious wars/conflicts.
