Weber Venturis - comments?

I just got this from Steve at Top End:

"Hi Ron,
The carbs come with 38mm chokes....There are no larger venturis available so what we and everyone else does is just machine them out. They can easily be turned out on a lathe to whatever size you want."

So people honestly put 38mm venturi Webers on big block engines?

I've asked them to quote a price for them setup with 44mm chokes and appropriate changes to match my engine combo. I'll report back my findings.

If folks have purchased webers and are maybe wondering where their top end went or the stellar hp the engine builder promised, I might start looking right here and at dyno plots that mysteriously flatten out at some RPM.

Clearly, for those running 289s and even some 302s it might not be a huge issue, but a know a lot of folks are running strokers.

Cb has the best buy on re-build kits. Most other companies want to sell you the hole kit. These folks will sell half which is all you need if you don't have to replace your floats. Which you probably won't have too. I just rebuilt mine for the first time after 12 years and everything was good except the gastkets. They give new needle and seat replacements which is good because they started to get pitted a little.. Cost $40.00 per carb compared to 85.00 a carb from other companies.

There are a couple of individuals in the VW vendor crowd that specifically make venturis for IDAs. If you must buy OEM Weber, the prices are a little steep near $39.00+ per copy. Enlarging smaller ones in a lathe is certainly an option, but how is the correct & scientific shape of the radius at the entry determined or is it disregarded for the most part????

I am reading and absorbing information for use with a 289. Many say to stick with 37 mm venturis but after reading opinions here, that may prove to be too small.

Rick, stick to the 37's on a 289. I am running 40's on a 380 and will probably need to switch to something bigger but the 37's should pull hard past 6500-7000. It depends how many rpm's you want at the expence of your low end torque. Before you go changing things, think about where you want you car to live. If it is over 5000 rpm's then maybe go bigger but for street and track days I think you will be happy. If not, I might have a set of 40's to sell.

For parts I have used Pierce Manifold in CA. They have all the parts you need. I have never heard that chokes are hard to find or unavailable. Ron, you are talking about carbs, right? not FI?

I have 2 sets of 45's. I will sell a full set of 8 chokes for $100 if anyone wants them. Rick, I still have the 40's but I'm not sure if I am going to run the 40's or the 45's. If I go with the 45's, you can have first crack at the 40's.
