What is this?

This is a photo of the rear bodywork of 1006 at Le mans, 65. The rear body work is open,. See an aluminium box. The curl of the indicator wire and the bolts attaching the pivot bracket can be seen.

Given where it is, vulnerable to water and better places for it within the car , what is it ?

The box appears to be about 3" deep and 4" tall ( guessed ) as we look at it, the length going left runs out of the photo so cannot be estimated .
The body is open so the unseen length as we see it would be the height when the body is closed.
