What use do you get ?

Hi all, my first posting,

I wondered what do you use your GT40 for, do you have weekends away and meetups, weekend tours, track days or what ?

Also, does anyone know information on GTD P 4 OGT a car for sale at Barrons auction in February ?

Hi,
A general search of the forum should give you a pretty good idea of what we use our cars for.
In my case, I've taken my car on the ferry to Bilbao and spent a week driving back to UK via the Angouleme classic weekend. It rained all the way and my wife and I looked like drowned rats at the end, but we loved every minute as French autoroute driving is very well suited to the cars. I've been to the Le Mans Classic twice, done track days at Goodwood and Spa, with Donington and Faye de Bretagne in Nantes coming up in 2011.
The best way to find out what's going on is to join the Club; go to an area meeting near you and talk to people. We're a very friendly bunch, and most people have done most things and will offer advice if asked.
The GTD you mentioned has been advertised in the Club magazine for a while, but was grossly over-priced. Even the Barons guide price is very optimistic - at aeronautical standards, it's over-engineered. I was going to the Barons sale to look at it in December with someone who wanted to buy a '40, but he bought an Aston Martin the day before instead!

Hi Tony,
Many thanks for your prompt and comprehensive reply, just what I ordered.
What do you consider a reasonable price for this car ?
Thanks Barry.

Hi

I'd echo Tony's comment and join the club or go to the nearest meeting and talk to as many owners as you can.
Don't be hasty, virtualy no two cars are alike and will have been built with different aims in mind. Be sure you know what it is you want the car to do and then look for one that has those features, it can be very expensive to change the characteristics of a track car to a tourer and vice versa.
Other than the local area meetings the biggest gathering in the near future will be at Donnington Park 25 April just about every make and type will be there.
These are not predictable BMW,Audi,VW Ford's, Try as many as you can before you buy

Hi Barry,

I use my GT40 mostly for trips to the local plumbing store for supplies....or sometimes to get milk for the (four) kids...and occasionally a dinner date with my wife on the rare occasion a) we can convince someone (dumb enough) to babysit four unruly kids, and b) my wife has forgotten how loud it is, and how uncomfortable the seats are, since the last time she was in it.

Never used it for a track event (not allowed in the local vintage racing, transaxle too weak for real track time), nor a weekend trip (too loud and uncomfortable), nor a long cross country drive (again, not comfortable).

That said, I'm planning on doing a desert drive this coming Summer. We'll see how it goes.

Hi Barry,
I am using it as often as I can, around 5000km last year....I don't care what the trip is, as long as it doesn't rain, isn't to hot ( >26 degree, no air condition) or it isn't to cold (<15 degrees, engine doesn't get warm and tiers stay cold)....So basically I don't like it to be a trailer queen, as I see no value in a car I am spending $$$ on and can't drive it regulary.....Currently I am running the first inspection and it seems to bee all fine ....Making some enhancements and learn what I can do better on the GTD that's on the jig waiting for me :-)
Cheers

Only done around 7K miles in three years and 1500 of those was in one week going to South Germany and back.:stunned: I use mine whenever I can in dry weather and just want a drive or to go to shows etc. Most owners use them only in the dry not because of poor handling but because of the clean up needed after to prevent rust. In the UK most are laid up over winter to avoind the salt on the roads. Track days are on my list of things to do but sound limits prevented me last year. Why not go along to Donington on 25th April and chat to the many 40 owners that will be there for the AGM and track day? :pepper: Because I live in Torquay just driving around the coast in the height of the tourist season gives quite a buzz and puts a smile on mine and others faces.

Barry, I use mine mostly for weekend drives in the country. I also take it to local car shows and have ventured to a few not so local shows. Its not track driven because of what I consider a weak transaxle. I do have A/C so the car does get driven in the brutal Florida summers. The A/C helps but works hard to keep me cool in the car. I could use it like Cliff does (I could almost see his tongue in his cheek!) but becausee the car attracts so much attention and has no door locks I fear some bold bast**d might just invite himself into the car while I was away. I doubt anyone would steal it since he/she probably would have no idea how to turn the pumps on. I could also take it to the local track just to do "parade" laps but that would be too tempting so I don't.

Lowest price I have seen was £12000 - about 5 years ago and the car had a Rover engine and needed a lot of bodywork prep and paint

Most expensive GTD I have seen advertised £57000 (Knock off wheels (plus spares with slicks) webbers, ZF, fire system etc)

So somewhere in between those 2 figures

Well the guide price says £35-45K. If you can get it for less you'll be happy (but the owner won't).

I would be looking to change the interior and the steering wheel; but that would be my personal preference. Maybe a cover over the piece sticking out the rear end as well, and complete the look by changing the rear air vents to Le Mans style.

If you are looking to buy see if you feel you want to make changes after sale, cost them. Take your max price you are willing to pay for it subtract that and that's your max bid.

If not, there will be others that come round.
