Which Weber Setup?

I'm about to lay out the cash for my Weber setup. I need some help in determining the optimal setup for my application. Here is my engine

331 stroked 302
10.7:1 compression
Hydraulic roller cam (.598/.598 lift, 230/230 dur)
Vic Jr heads (P&P, 2.05/1.60)

I've seen several different setups - 48IDA, 48IDF, and 44IDF. The car will be 95% street driven.

I don't know if you have talked to Steve at TEP, but he was pretty helpful when I got the TWM manifold and injection. Worth a call, if you have not chatted with him.

Hi Bill,

My vote is for 48IDAs, look the best plus they're original. Your going to have the same tuning issues to work out whether you go with IDAs or IDFs:)

Bill, everyone I've talked to said to use the IDA's - all had various reasons - - don't know which of them were valid or not at this point -

I have 48IDFs, they run FANTASTIC (no problem of any kind). My car is for the street, Bought the carbs/manifold from Pierce (I think Ron also has the same set up). It is not just a choice but also technical experience! The question that should have been asked is. My experiance is "blah blah" and what is the best choice for my ability?. And What will workd best with my type of engine?Or! Who can I pay to tune my car I have alot of money, webers look cool and I don't care how much it cost!
It is good to ask what has worked best for your type of application but the person making the recomendation may have good technical experiance tunning these carbs. For a beginer, you MUST get the book on Webbers and READ IT. Understand the theory of tuning/ emulison/ progression of the stages of emulsion /rebuilding/climate you live in/Typical trouble shooting tricks COUGH COUGH.Timming advance or retard Ect..Ect. I have seen pleanty of people that switched from normal asperated carberator to Webbers than switch back to standard carb. Why! They did'nt take the time to understand the tunning procedures. Problems do come up from time to time and of course if you got the money, You can call the webber specialist and they will help you BUT at a big price. Get the book on Webbers First!Then see if you can handle the technical issues. It is better to know now before you spend the money. In fact I purchased my full Original set of Webbers from a guy that gave up. Webbers " in my opinion", are the best. Before I bought them, I bought the book read it three times. When I new that I could handle it i bought the set. I have had them on my car for over 10 years abnd run perfect. I will not go back to the normal carbs. The #1 question every body ask me is "How hard are they to tune? Anserw! simple. "if you know what you are doing".
This forum has good information regarding webbers. But I have seen thereads that say try this set of emulion tube/Idle jet/main jet...Great it worked for there car but may not work for yours! Every engine is different. There is a base point but the rest is up to you. I garenntee that their will be an issue with tunning when you get started. I'm am not trying to discourage you but just trying to make it easier for you when you get them. Believe me. It is easier to know your self than having to call somone for help every time you get into trouble. The upside, is when there set you rarley have to go back and re-check them. In addition to getting the set you need certain tools that are criticle. EX. Several set of jets/idle jets/air corectors/Air balance tools and A good eye and Ear if you don't have a dino in your garage. I want you to have a good experiance with these carbs! They are the best! The rewards are neck snappining excelleration and years of ohhhhs and ahhhs. You will go out to the garage and pop the hood just to have a little lookeee along with the knowlege that you have with not just owning them. Don't be one of those guys that I love to ask what main jets there running and they look at you with a dumb look and say "AHHH I don't know" Webbers command respect along with the knowlege/ privilage to have them on your car. You can take it or leave what I wrote...I don't care. I'm just a guy who can't spell and everybody hates. But believe me.. If you don't take the time to understand what you are getting into you will be sorry you did'nt listen to my thread and curse that damn oliver for being right..If you decide to go with EfI you will have the same issues but now you have a computer to also throw in the loop.Please let everybody on the forum what you decided to do. Threads like Fali sounds good and sounds easy but ask him who tunned them for him or what it took to get them to run "fantastic". Than see what he says. Will it be "Ahh I don't know" or "I have so much money that i pay a person to tune them" Or
"I tunned them and here is what I had to do to get them to run fantastic". One more little thing! If you screw up! Kiss the motor bye bye!

Sounds like it's not a decision whether your getting webers but deciding between IDA vs IDF. I'd opt for the IDA's for authenticity.

They both have their tuning issues. Whether you already understand the Weber procedure or not, you will soon /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banana.gif

(don't waste your time, but if you did a search here on "Webers" you'd see my many inquiries and all the invaluable help offered by members here that got me through my learning curve. Thinking back on it now, those days contributed alot to my love of this site /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smoke.gif thanks guys)

It's hard to humble but thanks tim. One thing I forgot to add is I drive my car on the street and take it too the track. Street driving is good with webbers put it takes a liitle more skill. Idf"s Behave more like normal fuel injection systems and are very good and reliable for the street. Webbers in my opion are the best for originality on my original 66 Shelby.. on my Gt40, i'm going with the custom made cross rams set EfI with 50mm throttle bodies to feed the beast at 175MPH with out starving and blowimng up the motor. Pictures will be posted when finished. Also! Tim is wright..
You will be sucessfull with patiance. That is were people give up! Once you got and understand it, you will be rewarded with the brotherhood of the WEBERWORLD. It is to bad that i dont live in cali. I tune newbies cars for free..That is how much I love these carbs.

Oliver - nice post. Anyone that is this excited about the webers has got to be onto something. My plan is to use a streetable ford small block (shooting for upper 300's or low 400's hp) and my plan is to go with the webers. How can you not love the look of those under the rear glass on the GT40!?!

To what book are you referring? I see a couple choices:

HP Weber Manual (has pic of a manifold with gold plated quad webers on top with huge stacks)
Haynes Weber Techbook

Get HP WEBBERS. Do a search and yo will have no problem. I think its 20 bucks but the best 20 you will ever spend. It is very clear in definitions and theory. A little intimidating at first because the theory. No need to worry to much about theory they are just try let you understand what happens in the carbs and the flow sequence. The major points to study are troublshooting and basic getting started setup. After that, I as well as others can quickly guide you through any real tough spots you don't understand but if you read the book it will anserw your questions for the most part the rest is information by experiaence...and that is were the forum can help.If you know the theory and have a good base setup, the rest of the tuning will fall into place. Who do you plan to buy from? This is also critical! Inglese inductions are very nice but big buckoroos. Especially tunning, although if you give them all your engine specs they will give you the base setup and base setting ...they will help you tune but at a price.If you going with a more streetable setup we/I can help greatly with jetting/start up tunning ect/..ect. If you buy used, BE CAREFULL Make sure you have somone that knows the carbs check them out. There are people out there that will sell a good looking setup ...looks can be deceiving. Linkage/ and other parts have to be in good condition if ther are any problems, you will have problems tunning. You already see how much info is needed to be sucessfull...Don't let this scare you..It will come easy once you get the book. Also when you have a question, people will know what your talking about. Your on your way Grasshopper!.

one other thing to remember about a new multi-Weber setup...don't take anything for granted (like the carbs are matched or the quality control is great). You might find in a multiple weber setup that the carbs did not come with the same parts in them. Ask me how I know...

Start at the beginning - find out what they are built with (tubes, jets, acc pump, etc.) , make sure they are the same, then start from there.
