Apparently this was sold off of eBay. I hope someone here is giving it a good home in the back of their GT40!! Let us know if you snagged it.

Bune,

The Pantera gearbox is a ZF 5DS25-2.

Ford GT40 MK3s were the "Street" version of the GT40s and the only ones that used ZF boxes. These transaxles were used in ther MK3s because the are sychromesh (use hylically cut gears) and cannot handle the power demands of LeMans racing. I believe there were only 9 GT40 MK3s manufactured by Hollman & Moody in the late 1960s.

The MK3's used the ZF 5DS25-1 transaxle. The primary difference between the Pantera and the MK3 gearboxes is the mounting configuration. The ZF 5DS25-2 is rotated 180 degrees about the center axis when compared to the ZF 5DS25-1. Also the mounting points differ.

I was very fortunate to buy a used ZF 5DS25-1 from Hollman & Moody in 1972 (for $500) when they got out of the GT40 business. I mated it to a small block Chevy V8. Similar to the configuration used in Lola T70.

I later picked up a spare ZF 5DS25 (no dash number). I assume this version preceeded the ZF 5DS25-1. These two gear boxes have similar mounting confgurations, however the driveshaft on the 5DS25-1 is much shorted that it's predecessor. The second transaxle cost ~$1,000 in 1982.

If the price doubles every ten years, that would put these gearboxes at a current market value of ~$6,000 to $7,000.

$3,000 in today's market sounds like a great price for a ZF transaxle.

Good luck with your pursuit! I hope you can locate and buy one of these.

Mike, I believe they built 7 MK III's.
They were not built by Holman Moody but by FAV, as I recall.
MK I GT40s had Collotti gearboxes up to GT112 I think, and then went to the
ZF gearbox for the standardized GT40 MK I and the MK III.
The MK IIs and the MK IVs used a Karkraft T44.
My memory is not what it was. Am I right ?

Johan,

You are quite right. I do believe that virtually all MK Is were retrofitted with ZF boxes as the Collottis just would not hold up; although, I can't vouch for the chassis number where the switch was made in production. As I recall, all of the early DNFs (pre-66) except one were gearbox issues.

There are some 5 DS25s floating around out there that came from or were built for the BMW M1 midengine car. Around three years ago, a number of these were discovered sitting around in a warehouse in Europe and were put on the market. There was quite a bit of discussion about these gearboxes back then because they were selling at really good prices: ≈$2K. A search on BMW M1 should find the relative threads. The input shafts were a skoosh smaller, but the internals were much improved over the earlier -1 and -2 boxes.

Lynn,
I have a new ZF-2 with the stronger BMW M1 gear train. Lloyd Butfoy built it for me three years ago. I believe that the shaft was made slightly slimmer to reduce stress.
