The 917 used the tube frame to run the coolant forward to the radiators...looks like this fella is using the tube frame to exhaust the engine!

The 917 was "äir cooled", but of course received cooling benefit from the oil system as well. It was the oil, therefore, that was the coolant sent via tube frame to the front oil cooler. It might never have reached the front if the tubing had been welded up by the above Mr Rough and Ready.
