F1 in 2011

Ross Brawn may return to Modena but Montezemelo says it won't make a jot of difference, and the ice man ( Raikonnen) has been seen in Wantage . That might not mean much unless you know the area. There is a factory nearby at Grove. Senna may get a contract for 2012 at Enstone.
Dinkum? I think?

Hi Pete,

I live in Singapore.

I attended the race two years ago. A client, who's client's husband was an organizer and I got box seats for qualifying. 5 star, 5 course meal with complimentary champagne and booze all night.

I am not sure if I am going to be free next weekend.

When do you arrive?

I understand me quite well so it's OK with me. Pete, another couple of gargles with a well cooled Krug and everything becomes a bit clearer.
Any way - back to subterfuge and deception - Adam Parr of Williams fame, showed Kimi Raikonnen around the Williams F1 facilitities at Grove (a suburb of Wanrage).
Is that clear enough? And its Dinkum. I think.
Make of it what you will.
Does Dinkum mean the same as No Duff? You sometimes hear No Duff on the R/T exchanges during news reports form Afghanistan. It' means - "this is for REAL."

When do you fly back Pete?

What hotel are you staying at?

Have you been to Singapore before?

I had an excellent time. Box seats were at the end of the pits facing the cars as they exit.

Dave,
according to this site 'fair dinkum' is derived from the Chinese for 'real gold'
Origin of 'fair dinkum'

I used to use the word Duff a lot, but generally in reference to something that was broken or not working properly, also the term 'old duffer' meaning an older gentlemen who is losing his faculties, or just a duffer meaning someone who wasn't very adept at anything.
I do recognise 'No Duff' however as meaning 'it isn't untrue'

I also heard the term 'Duff off' and that's what I'm going to do now as this is definitely thread drift:)

William, Yes we have been to Singapore before, it's one of my favourite Cities.
We are staying at the Fairmont and fly out Monday morning.
Can you suggest a good restaurant for lunch, that is Authentic Singapore and not dumbed down for the tourists? The reason I specify lunch is the races are at night. Anyone else who knows Singapore restaurants please chime in.

David, Dave B is on the money (pun intended) with the origin of Fair Dinkum.

The origins of other terms are not as clear, or are disputed. Dinkum or fair dinkum means "true", "the truth", "speaking the truth", "authentic" and related meanings, depending on context and inflection. It is often claimed that dinkum was derived from the Cantonese (or Hokkien) ding kam, meaning "top gold" or "deposit", during the Australian goldrushes of the 1850s. This, however, is chronologically improbable since dinkum is first recorded in the 1890s. Scholars give greater credence to the notion that it originated with a now-extinct dialect word from the East Midlands in England, where dinkum (or dincum) meant "hard work" or "fair work", which was also the original meaning in Australian English.[1] The derivation dinky-di means a 'true' or devoted Australian. The words dinkum or dinky-di and phrases like true blue are widely purported to be typical Australian sayings, however these sayings are more commonly used in jest or parody rather than as an authentic way of speaking.

I have heard the expression "no duff", but more common usage in OZ is
" she is up the Duff" an expression that strikes fear into Teenagers. Meaning she is pregnant.:stunned:

Indeed.
The RN had HMS Duff - a frigate in WW2 on loan from the USN. Got duffed up a few times so the repainted it and had it towed it back. No Duff.
duffer - Definition of duffer at YourDictionary.com
This duff(er) word goes on and on.

The third explanation of the noun Duffer seems to fit a few (of us).
In fact all of them do. Again No Duff
  1. Slang a peddler, as of cheap trinkets
  2. Slang anything counterfeit or worthless
  3. Informal a person, now often elderly, who is incompetent, ineffectual, or dawdling
  4. Informal a relatively unskilled golfer

Pete,

If you're into curries, when I go through Singapore, I always try to get to Sami's on Dempsey Road. Fish head curry a favourite. It's set back off the road on a low hill. Apparently, the building used to be the officer's club in colonial days.

On one occasion, they stayed open to serve three of us a meal, because we only had a few hours in Singapore and were only there between lunch and evening opening times. No rush, no pressure; we were allowed to enjoy our meal at our own pace. Waiters asleep all over the place preparing for the evening rush. We left a good tip that day. They know how to look after you in Singapore.

Cheers,

Lance

Indeed. It's a long time to wait for just a single bottle though but yes - I'll go for it.
He will line up alongside Alonso in 2013.

Pete, there is a megga bash on Sunday evening in the main bar and central area (between the two hotel areas) in the Stamford and may just spread across the road into the Long Bar as well. Apparently RBR and going to paint the town. I suppose there has to be a condition which is a Vettel P1 and or P2 with Webber in P1.

Thanks blokes it looks like Sami's will get a run.
Dave, Mclaren and Ferrari might have something to say about RBR P1 & P2.
That would give Vettel the championship so would be a good reason for a party. I would have to keep Di away from the kid though, she wants to break that finger off and shove it up his khyber.
I also hear it is dinkum that Button will drive a red car next season. So I'm in boys.
