Cooling the beasty

Hi all, thinking ahead I'm looking at options for the type and mounting position of the oil cooler for the engine.
I have ordered a Mocal sandwich block with oil pressure take off outlet.
Intention is to mount a Mocal 19 row oil cooler on the engine bay sill with -10 hoses.
I would like to cover the cooler with a nice looking but practical ally cover to direct the air flow.
Any input and pictures would be great to get some ideas

Cheers

Tidy and out the way Frank, I have a clear space on the passenger side , come on you must have some pictures of one there, you have zillions on pictures.
Cheers

Kieth,
I have several on my computer for you to look at. First mine. I put two coolers on the rear at the rear vents. I covered them with stainless mesh and a surround.

The coolers are as close to the vents as possible, with a puller fan on each, controlled by thermostats and switches. The coolers are mounted with the piping at the top. I did this to make sure there is no trapped air in the cooler, thus reducing the efficiency. I mounted two because, one, I felt there should be symmetry back there, and, two, If I choose to race it the temps will warrant a cooler and fan.

Here is one of both coolers.

Here are some of the other setups that I found on the computer.

This last one may be for water, but it shows you the possibilities.

Not I suspect one for you Keith but for those on a budget going for s/h parts the Mazda RX-8 is a good donor of a pair of oil coolers. Especially as the rotary is not the most reliable of beasts and a lot will be broken for spares now or soon.

This is what I've done. I wanted air that is as cool as possible going through the oil cooler, so mounted it forward in the engine bay. A combination of aluminium shrouding around the oil cooler and fibreglass shrouding on the rear clip, that seals off the area when closed, means that only external air coming in through the scoop, and all of it, must go through the oil cooler.

Just make sure you put a thermostat bypass inline as well. Too cool can be as bad as too hot.

Rich, I put a water to oil cooler on my plane (turbo charged water cooled engine) at low altitude oil temps were normally hot and at 12,000+ it was very cold sometimes, after doing so I had the best of both, the water to oil cools and heats. This was told to me many years ago by Mike Trusty and I have used it on almost all of my projects but the GT40 only out of laziness as it already had one.
