R C R 917's and a 962

Fran,

If you don't advertise the 962, how much interest do you think you're going to have?

I'm interested....Am I interested enough to sell my GT40 and buy a kit, maybe.

Please, more pictures, more info.

I have posted on and off about the 962 for years on this forum....

Its not a nut and bolt replica chassis btw and as I mentioned I am not really sure about doing anymore..

An SLC with some small detail mods to the headlight pockets/nose and a 962 style wing would be a much better car to live with.

The 962 also has a drivetrain issue too with the large spacer that needs to be put between the engine and the trans to get the out put shafts to line up...yet another wrench in the works that dictates only a certain package can be used.

I'm glad I am not the only one that had those thoughts...

One of our own forum members here has an original Rothmans 962....lucky bugger..

So I guess I had better not write off the 962 after all by the sounds of it.

Contact me via email/phone/PM if anyone wants more details...

What about using a Corvette transaxle? (Sacrilegious but I had to ask)

I read through more than few threads on the 962 (as Fran stated), the really big showstopper for street usage was the lack of a Glass DOT windshield for the car. Though that fact kills it as a consideration for me, I still thank Fran for building yet another classic icon of racing history and sharing it with us. When Fran first posted those pics it brought back memories of my love for the Rothman cars!

There was, in period, a proposal to re- engine the 962 with the v8 from the 928 and add a pair of turbos in the manner of the Sauber Mercedes.

Fran, I notice that the 962 body is a later modified variety or is the IMSA tail? Does this contribute to or reduce the fiddle factor for the bodywork versus the group c short or long tail?

The body is actually the 1885-89 962c (group C) short tail. we made our own wing and sideplates....

It would make no difference to the fiddle factor I am afraid...

Back in the day Dauer was charging a $1,000,000 for a road car, that would now cost considerably more as the cost of a 962 of any variant has risen in value...so there must have been a lot of fiddling then too I expect..

In 2014 dollars for the Dauer would be approx 2.1M USD, I got away pretty cheap with Fran then! I admit I had a little fiddle factor at first, Fran came through with the 962C tail. The nice thing about the 962, is there were so many permutations of bodywork, aerodynamics, engines used, wheel sizes etc that fiddle factor is irrelevant. Other than I don't have a factory 962 VIN (962-XXX).

Also like to add Fran acquired 962 wheels both custom barrels form Jong Bloed, and machined center rims in house, 962 style seats, custom cage for the bodywork that differs from the SLC. He even put up with the trucker coming a day early for pickup :)

You don't have an authentic Porsche 962 VIN? Pffffft, that's no good, your car is so totally not authentic at all. :shy::shy::shy:

Now, if you'll excuse me I have to go back to my LS-powered 917

Hi Dusty, I think there are more than a few of us that would like to see the progress of your 962 build. Are you planning on doing a build thread on the site?

I'm currently shipping the car to a vendor on the west coast. He probably won't start work until May when I move back. I need to see the car in person and make an assessment of what needs to be done, any modifications, parts and paint. I did look into a long tail, and see Dave Slack has some, but unable to get a hold of. Looks like he has original and replica cast parts, but would need chassis modifications to integrate. I may entertain a transaxle with stiffness to accomodate a stressed member setup like Derek Smith. I hesitate due to sequential gearboxes not being street friendly, and rebuild intervals are notorious. I plan on driving this car across country. So for now I contract the vendor to get the car running. I have a world challenge 90 ZR-1 to finish restoring and get my hands on a Trans AM GT1 C5 or C6 Vette as well. I still love Chevys.

I called Bruce Canepa the other day to see what he was asking for his 962C short tail. $1.4 Million...I promptly apologized for wasting his time.

Don't let that stop you. A 962 has been on my back burner for decades and it won't stop me. I found a source for a laminated glass screen.

Would love to see more pictures Fran, but you probably already knew that.
