Scotts build thread

Scott, You are insane crazy with your ability to carry out these ideas you get, good for you. It sure is fun to watch. Keep up the cool work. Like I said fun to watch.

Thanks Joe. Ya, even with the relatively exclusiveness of having an SLC, mine just has to be different. Lol. Every car build I try to do something original, this is just abit extensive. But, a snap since it is just fg and not metal work.

A little more refined from last pics. Rear side will get some vents or something, and rear face will get vents too. Lower rear pod is perfect for exiting exhaust if I choose to.

Looking pretty balanced imo, even with the smaller "street" wing. Not sure on big wing placement yet.

I liked the look of the piece you put in above the diffuser in post #906. Seemed to give that big opening a more complete look.

Yes, that inside area will be filled in. That piece no longer works with the mods i made for this design. I was getting the look of a pissed off chinese big mouth bass with the rear pics you referred to in 906. Lol.
The new one will be a solid piece, recessed, with lots of cut outs in it. I need to get rid of the rear "face". It needs to be layed up in a few different parts, so that piece will come in once sides are layed up and installed.
This is why I post so many pics. I couldn't pick it up the chinese big mouth bass look in person, it took seeing pics here to see it. :D

A few more changes here and there. Wheels are still being held up. Really need them mounted before I can finalize the rear.
Tried yet another engine cover. The previous ones, I was trying to make as small as possible. This one I decided to take up abit more space. Not bad looking really. Nice flat surface on the top also for a window.

Does anybody want to join in on a wind tunnel testing of their car? I found a place in NC that has a wind tunnel for not alot of money. $495 an hour, with 2 hour minimum. Sounds like you can do two cars in that amount of time if you are not trying to do development and making changes during the process.
They can read down force, drag, and side forces. The wind tunnel creates an 85mph wind, and they have a smoke wand and videoing capabilities. They can scale up the readings to whatever speed you would like. So, they can figure what the downforce and drag will be at 200, 250, 300, whatever.
The more investigating I do into cfd, the more I am hearing how unreliable it can be. This is from my engineer friends that write the programs and others that use them alot. Way too many variables to consider, and it would take forever to give the program all the data it needs to make a correct simulation. So, this is a relatively cheap, and repeatable platform for testing over the cfd.

I would not be ready until in the spring, but just let me know if you would like to be part of it. Maybe with enough cars, could just get a full day.

The car's rear end is looking 'more gooder' all the time!

The only thing that's bugging me a bit (and I don't really know exactly why) is the rear wing. Somehow it looks more 'ornamental' than aerodynamically functional...'know what I mean? :undecided:

Perhaps raising the wing up off the rear fenders a bit via a pair of aerodynamic struts would/might remedy that???

Separating the wing from the fenders might also show off the shape of the now 'sexy-looking' rear fenders much better IMHO. ;)

Regardless, I wouldn't kick that car out of my garage no matter what the final rendition of its rear wing might be!

Hey Larry. I see exactly what you are saying. But, there is still the big original wing that will be going on. So, focus will pull off that wing alot in the final. It is very much so operational and make a big difference though. It should see relatively clean air under 120mph (my prediction) and then over that, the main wing will be in clean air below and above those speeds. That little wing will also have linear actuators on it and will operate for braking assistance above 45mph. At its full upright position, it will close off a large area and should really help braking. Operation will be at roughly 1.5" per second, so roughly 3 seconds to get to full up position, so it will not be an instant chassis disruption. More gradual, but still fast. Both the engine cover and that lower rear wing, I am classifying as "disappearing aero". Meaning, they will be in clean air and effective in lower speeds like 120mph or less, but, will be out of clean air after that, further reducing the drag at higher speeds. After more careful consideration with the engine cover design and it's potential to be in a low pressure zone at high speed, after watching many wind tunnel videos, there will still be more than enough air for the motor. I was over thinking the motors need for air. Meaning, just since speed is up, does not mean motor needs more air. So, engine requirements are the same for 8,000rpm in first gear, or 8,000rpm in 6th. In that scenario, there will be more than enough and the adjustment to the roof and windshield intersection may take car of alot of the issue in the first place.
The actuators I am looking at have a 900# holding force each. So, I will really need to make the cross section of the wing very strong and tie the actuators together via the linkage so they work at the same exact pace. Holding it up flat at 150mph will create alot of force on it!! The sides of it will be permanently part of the fenders, then the middle section operational hinged at front between fenders. So ya, lots more will be happening.

After seeing a pic of a Saleen S7, I would call that about the closest cousin to the rear design. The corners look really sharp right now, but since I am covering this plug in fg, and using that piece as my final to finish (not making mold, creating plug, then using inside of plug to make the final part) , all of those corners will get larger radiuses and look rounder in final piece. I think that is my biggest problem with it right now. Imagining the final part, not the part as it looks right now.
Around the wheel well needs some more work and the shape of the outer rear fenders do too. they are at about 70% of what the finished piece will look like, but can't do it until I have new wheels and tires mounted. Ugh.
It will be done at some point! Lol.

Looking good. On the tail lights, these just came out for the mustang and mimic the Ford GT. If you removed the outer black housing and just kept the circular light, they could be pretty cool.

Ya, those could probably look good. They are $500 though and quite a bit to gamble on them working and cutting up which would make it so I couldn't even sell them if they didn't work.
I am still keeping my eyes open though for options.

I did something something similarly inspired by the new Ford GT tail lights to my Lotus tail lights. The OE 2005 lotus tail lights are incandescent and do not look all that neat when lit up (I believe they are almost identical to Ferrari 355 and 360 tails), and I didn't want to pay $1000 for 2006+ OEM LED Lotus tail lights that have a high failure rate, so I rolled my own, for about $160 in parts (you would need the tail light housings as well, but 2005s should be cheap). This is what they look like:

And this is how I made them: How to: LED COB halo ring tail light conversion for 2005 Elise - LotusTalk - The Lotus Cars Community

What is the o.d. of them? The one problem I have had trying to purchase them is that nobody can tell me the dia of stock parts. Most things are drop shipped on ebay, so most don't have the parts on hand to measure.
I have looked at the Lotus tail lights befroe, and alot of Ferrari ones, Chevy HHR, Corvette, etc. Atleast now I can see how the Lotus ones mount, which would be pretty easy to use universally.

Hi Scott,

I can double check when I get home, but I think the OD is 120mm. The outer halo ring has an OD of 110mm if that helps you eyeball it.

Yes, the mounting is pretty simple; I think 355 and 360 lights mount exactly the same but have longer bodies.

I'll get you an exact measurement when I get home. Thanks,

Rich

Ya, found that site awhile back. Just didn't really have what I was looking for.
The round ones I have have the glo/neon tube look on the outside when lights are on, and the rectangular ones are like that too. Really like that look, but very few choices in them in a universal set up.

Okay, the Lotus lights are 4 9/16" (116mm) in diameter, and and 1 11/16" (43mm) deep, as best I can tell with a tape measure.

Thanks for checking. I am at 4.75" right now, but the finish inside will be about 4.4" I'm guessing. Didn't look like there was any deals on them either. About $500 I was seeing used. I did find new Ferrari 360 ones for about that price too.

There is still alot I can do to finish these off though. Just made a quick panel to flush them out. ZThis is kind of the plan. Maybe some trim rings too.

Scott have you looked at 'Optronics Glolight" ive used them in a couple builds.I just put them in a Unimog I built so they are kinda truck looking but may be something you can work with. They are made to work with a separate rubber retainer but I'm sure you could find a way to mount them.Look them up on Utube to see them lite up may be too industrial looking but worth a look.

Yes, I have been through all of Optronics catalog. The round ones I have have that glow ring like the optronics. I think just making the right mount for them and a very light tint to tone down the chrome middle part, and they could look really good. As is, they are nearly identical to the Veyron in color and size. Just need to mount nicely.

Made a couple more changes. Cut a touch more off the bottom of fender behind rear tire, and cut down the top of the rear fender, after the rear tire. I was seeing if I could pull off having the body line raise after the rear tire and have the high point not centered over the rear tire. It just kept bugging me though. Now it has the rear tire centerline as high point, and slopes down slightly, then raise back up for the spoiler. Made a big difference in detail and stretching the back out a bit more.

Edit- looks like it is pretty tough to make out the change in the pics. It kind of washes out with no gloss.

Looking pretty integrated there Scottie, coming together nicely. I kinda like the rear lights standing out from the background myself. The wing looks NSXish blended into the tops of the quarters, looks good.
