My u-joints on the steering rack has some play, they are with needle bearings, but still there are some play on the steering wheel. Is there someone with a good advice where I can get two joints with good quality that has no play ? Even if it is a small play it irritate me when driving. The steering should be tight .

Hi

Are the U joints really tight on the shaft?

Originally I had metric bolts in them and even when pulled really tight got some movement.

Changed them for UNF bolts and these clamped the u joints more firmly on the shaft and stopped the slack.

Assuming it's a through bolt, use partially threaded bolts as well, with the grip length (shoulder) all the way through the shaft portion as the shoulder is larger dia. than the threaded portion.

For replacement joint use Borgeson

All my bolts and nuts on the entire car are UNF aircraft grade, and I have used a reamer where needed so it is in the cross in the U-joint the problem are. When season is over I will reasamble the rack and see how to fix the slack.

I don't know if they would work with the splines on your rack, but if you want OEM quality look at the joints used on small Toyota pickups and vans. I know they go onto older Ford splines.
