Thanks for the updates Warren..

I'm glad that you and your brother are understanding of some of the skepticism here.. There are so many rumors and things kept in secracy about these cars that it's not even funny...

Looking forward to seeing and hearing more about this GT40!

I was looking at an old Road & Track and saw that a Daytona Coupe was for sale at $6,800. If only I had a time machine. Also a good friend of mine, said that when he was my age (19) there was a Maserati Birdcage for sale in his area. The price was somewhere around $4,000 or in the ball park. He begged his dad to buy it, but his dad said that there was no reason to buy it. If only his dad knew...

It's not a GT40, but I had the chance to buy an Indian 4 when I was a senior in high school, for $50. Cash I didn't have and my Dad, ever so determined to detour my automotive/motorcyle interest, refused. "That's and old piece of Junk". I spent the last 40 years in that business, don't regret a minute...well maybe THAT minute...

No kidding, Dave, When I was in high school in Massachusetts, my friend Chip Karle had a garage full of old Indians, including at least one Blackhawk Chief. I think he had five or six of them. Imagine what they are worth now.

Even weirder; there is a book called "Big Sid's Vincati" which details, among other things, a fellow who lived in Norfolk, VA, in the eighties who tuned and rebuilt Vincents. I was there in the 80s- I moved there in 1982 to begin postgrad training. I must have passed these guys on the street at some point; never knew it. Wish I had, wish I had met them, wish I had seen their bikes.

My dad could have had either a a) f-car Daytona spyder, or b) a 300SL gullwing for $10,000 in about 1975 - should have bought both. I remember going to look at a nice f-car 246 dino for about $3,000 in late 70s too... Jeez. At the time we thought those cars were just kind of tired, old, and outdated cars that were a bit cliche.

15K would be about right for that car in the early 70ies.

I bought a 275 GTB for 6K then and my T70 Lola for about 3K.

250 GTO's were a little more about 18K...

As promised. Today's update on the #108. Not ready to give up the purchase price just yet.

So here is my latest installment. This will have to do until Monday or Tuesday next week. I will check in to read whatever comments are made but will not be able to respond.

I will delete details about addresses and phone numbers to protect individual privacy and make it know by using italics.

Here it is:

"I just located two pieces of correspondence related to my GT40. The first is dated July 28, 1971, addressed to Mr. George N. Sawyer, (deleted), Winona, Minnesota 55987, including a clip of the original ad in AutoWeek, expressing my interest in the car. The second piece is a carbon copy of a letter dated March 2, 1972, to a person in Cambridge, Mass., who was looking to buy a GT40 that I owned one, specifically GT108. The car is described as "equipped with the 5-speed transaxle and Webers." I also indicated that "the car has never been raced and has less than 5,000 total miles of street driving on it." In this letter I claim both possession and ownership of GT108. (Last sentence is to me so I deleted it.)"

"From the August 7, 1971 (as are most magazines today, the issue arrives before the cover date), issue of Competition Press & Autoweek, this is the text of the ad:

"GT40 FORD. Sole roadster in existence. Never raced, ex-Ford showcar, chrome Webers, etc. Driven only once. Licensed for street use. Offers. George N. Sawyer, (Deleted), Winona, Minn. 55987; (507) (deleted)." My Comment: If you find the back issue with the ad you will see the deleted information."

End.

I was informed that additional pictures and copies of documents are on the way and should reach me today or tomorrow. Will share some stuff when I can. Have to dig through the stuff.

Are there any believers out there yet?

Till then.

Re: 1965 Mark 1 Roadster #108 is alive.

In the 'Ford that beat Ferrari' 108 is described as a transmission test car

It may have been delivered with a Colotti 4 speed but almost immediately in early 1965 the Zf 5 speed gearbox with synchro was being tested and very shortly Shelby raced sister 109 with it

How likely is it that Kar Kraft rebuilt the car and Sawyer sold it with a ZF still installed ?

My friend (same one who's dad could have bought the Birdcage) bought and still owns a Mclaren M16 (or M15..always get mixed up ((Indy 500 car)) driven by Peter Revson for only $750. He also just recently got a somewhat body/chassis of an indy car that turned out to be Dan Gurneys personal Eagle at Indy for i think $7,000 or so. He knew what he was looking at but not to the extent of Dan Gurney's personal race car. He was pretty happy to say the least.

Was the guy in Massachusetts David Carroll? When I was about 9 years old, I got a ride in his Mk. III.

(I assume there weren't that many people in Massachusetts looking to buy a GT40 in the early 70s)

The man in Massachusettes ran an ad in "Competition Press & Autoweek" for a GT-40. This was was prior to March 1972. At thattime my brother was already considering the sale of #108. His name was/is Paul R Lohnes in Cambridge, MA. He did not purchase the #108.

Documentation seems to be essential with lineage to an original GT-40, especially the 108 because of inaccurate record keeping or just not having the correct information. I will be posting a picture of a copy of the original magazine Ad placed by George Sawyer along with the initial contact letter sent by my brother. According to the letter, Mr. Sawyer ran the ad for three weeks.

So.. what happened next???? I'm still confused whether Warren or his brother owned 108???? A real mystery.. "elementary my dear Watson"!!... Andrew

Thanks!

But I did! I did not expect to see this posted, usually the message just goes to the mods. And yes, I have had a "thank you for the heads up" from the mods in the past!

OK.. so what happened? I want someone to explain this mystery please? Was it Warren's or his brother's 108, the dates don't seem to confer and why would you write to a guy selling a GT40 in a motoring mag? I'd call.. wouldn't you? Is this a April fool gag or am I missing something.. probably missing something.. knowing me! Regards.. Andrew

Must have been a glitch somewhere as I normally receive notifications (and yes they are most certainly appreciated - Thank you!)...

Don't know where Warren "Speed Racer" has gone off to... The last time he was logged in was April 4th.

I posted a copy of the response letter and the Advertisement in the gallery section about a month ago. Suggest you check it out. I will be posting a couple of additional pictures of #108 inside his garage in Springfield, IL during the time he owned it. I have prints but they are not as good quality as I would like. I'm sure that all the purists have a copy of the magazine where the ad appeared. The name and issue are provided. He also still has the engineering car manual with the drawings that everybody seems to desperately need.

There is another posting where everybody is trying to get copies for everybody to use. Copyright issues rearding reproduction and distribution and rights to sell are not clear. The man in England offers some of the pages that my brother has in his possesions.
