302 block side castings.

Noticed on a few race engines that the brackets that are part of the block casting at the edge of the head gasket, had been cut off and wondered what they are originally for. I've never seen anything connect or use them - what is their purpose ? (The bit towards the top right corner of the attached pic)

As described to me many years ago - those are to locate the block on the machine stand and all operations from bare-cast block to fully machined are based upon the location of the block by those pads..

The serve no purpose I'm aware of after the block has been fully machined.
 
Thanks Randy, confirmed what I was thinking - that they must be there for some sort of location in manufacturing.
