Audi 01X transmission

I was wondering what do you think torque wise a quattro box could handle when converted to 2wd. If to say you wouldn't use a v8. I know blasphemy. Just curious.

Guess it all depends on how the torque is applied. 300-ish wheel tq I'd imagine before it really starts going south if the car is driven pretty hard. If you took the secondary pinion shaft and had it stressed relieved and REM/Cryo treated it may hold more but the weak point is right at the transition of the splines on the secondary shaft where the primary/secondary pinion shafts engage the center diff. The secondary pinion shaft is really just a hardened machined tube with splines and bearing races. Maybe .200" thick at it's best.

Still been trying to locate the guy that used to produce the quattro bypass kit for the 016 audi's. No luck so far.

I will be using the shifter that Fran supplies for my 01X box. I know that a memebr has already used it on his 01E. The shifter, I think, is made for an 016/5000, and requires a little 'tweaking' for the 01E/01X. However, the forum member says he is extreamly happy with his and changes smoothly.

Take a look at what this gentleman has done:

Pretty crazy huh? It doesn't look like it would hold up, especially given the fact that the tranny will be sitting behind a twin-turbo Audi V8, and the fact that the rest of his project has been exquisitely engineered, it makes you wonder...

You can check out the rest of the project here:
Its in Swedish, and its 19 pages long, but believe me its well worth it!

The 01X is Audi's newer transmission replacing the 01E. It's an all aluminium design and rated by Getrag at 450NM max torque. one issue with the 01X is many parts aren't available as replacements. Audi assumes that if you have a problem with it, you send a cheque and your old transmission to them and get a new one back.

The 012 as found in the boxster is a decent transmission but is inferior to the 01E as gears are smaller and more fragile.

The 01E has a much longer history and many of the problems associated with it can be worked out. There are a few 900+ HP Audi's out there using the 01E without incident.

Covnverting an 01E from AWD to FWD isn't an option as it requries you to weld parts up which weaken things.

The only company I've found that specializes in 01E both with AWD and FWD is Advanced Automotion.

Hi Guys,

I have an 01X here in the box, meant to get a Quattro version but was sent a fully rebuilt unit that is FWD.

Do let me know if anyone is interested in this as I think can serve you well but is nothing for me.
I'm located in New Jersey and you may hit me up and we'll set something up.
Thanks in advance

Paul

:wrongforum: First post for you. This should be in the garage sale, read the forum rules that you just signed up to. This is about tech info on the 01X.

Hi Brett,

I'm sorry to come on here but I googled this transmission a whole bunch and finally got one, come to find out that it's FWD and i cannot use it, thought i'd come on here and provide it for someone that may be looking to get one at a rediculously low price.
I'm sorry if I offended you or any other forum member in any way but the truth is that I do not have a GT40.

Thanks

...I have compared the 01X with 01E..and 01X seams stronger build?

01e > 0a2 > 01x > 016

I am particularly interested in comparing the 01X and the 0A2, but so far have only managed to find info in comparison to the quattro 0A3.

- The axle base in the 01X is 75mm, the 0A3 has 82mm.

- The bearing carrier on the 01X is a exterior cast aluminium section, the 0A3 has an internal screw fixed steel-plate.

- The official torque rating of the 01X is 330Nm, the 0A3 has one of 450Nm.

I'm assuming the 0A2 is the FWD version of the 0A3, just as the 01X is for the 02X. As such, it may share features and a common structure with the 0A3.

If so, then it would be logical to assume the higher torque rating of the 0A2 (380Nm) is due to the higher axle base of 82mm, and to a lesser extent the steel plate bearing carrier.

If anyone can confirm those details for the 0A2, particularly the axle base, it would be very useful.

Here is what i have found out
Audi changed the transmission number 01E to 01X on 2wd trans year 2002-2005 ,but the 4wd still had the 01E numbers.

But the thing is.
I need to find out if the 01X and 01E Have the same mount to the frame..
and if i can use the 01E adaptorplate for ford 302 on the 01X???

/Dogge

01E was phased out in the 2003-2005 model years. In 2004 4 cylinder and V6 gas engines got the 01X transmission as it is a significantly lighter duty transmission than the 01E the 01X is similar in strength to the 5 speed 01A/012.

V8's and V6 tdi engines got the 0A2 transmission which has similar power capacities to the 01E. V10/W12/V8tt/V8tdi of the same vintage all used ZF tiptronics, either the 5HP24 or the 6HP26.

Both the 01E/01X/0A2 are available in FWD and AWD format.

After 2007 model year all manuals went to the 0B series of gearboxes with the front diff mounts along the side of the transmission.

I'm not sure what you mean by axle base, but the 01X gears are at least half the width of the 0A2 gears. pinion shaft/input shaft on the 0A3 is also much larger. Ring gear diameters are the same if I remember.

I'm not sure what you mean by axle base...

On a cross-section diagram of the gearbox, the centreline to centreline distance between the prop shaft (upper) and output (lower) shafts.

According to the Audi gearbox guide describing the 01X:
"The transmission housing of the 01X gearbox is divided into 3 parts and is made completely from pressure-cast aluminium.

The axle base, which was increased from 71 mm (012) to 75 mm, increases the lever arm, thereby allowing a higher torque transmission."
Describing the 0A3 it says much the same thing except:
"The axle base, which was increased from 75 mm (01E) to 82 mm, increases the lever arm, thereby allowing a higher torque transmission."
Unfortunately, the guide doesn't include details of the 0A2, so I was looking to corroborate if it is a 2WD cousin of the latter 0A3 and shares its 82mm axle base.

Brett, hat week did you have to do to get the shifter to work.
Also how is your speed sensor set up on your 01x box. I see the sensor for in the front of the housing that bolts onto the adaptor plate, jus not sure what the sensor then reads to give the speed output.

Phil

The 0A2/0A3 are the same design of transmission. 0A2 is 2 wheel drive and 0A3 is all wheel drive. The axle base you speak of regarding engineering of gears is the called the center distance, at least in the USA.
