We had a fantastic time last weekend at the Silverstone Classic. We were invited to compete in the Celebrity Charity Challenge. This was another two race event, sharing the car with a Celebrity who raced on the Saturday, whilst the owners raced on the Sunday, with all the proceeds going to Prostate Cancer.
It was a team event and the celeb teams were Bike legends, Olympians, Musicians, Screen stars and Sky Sport stars.
I was partnered with Tiff Needell who was wonderful. He was very respectful of the car and the fact that I needed something left to race on the Sunday! He was great fun, engaging and very happy to coach me with top tips!
The Celeb race was held in torrential rain and he drove a cracking race to come home fifth. Believe me it is heart in mouth stuff to watch your car being raced in those conditions, especially against Touring Car titans! On returning, Tiff proclaimed Buzby to be "lovely" and to "handle beautifully!"
Well that is great to know, but no more blaming the car now! The pressure is on!
Sundays race was dry, but I had qualified lousily and left myself a lot to do. A thing with these Academy A35's is that as they are all so similar, you have to qualify as well as possible to come anywhere. Anyway, I had a great race, made up five places and had great fun doing so. Again, Tiff was really nice and made a point of coming down to the garage for a debrief.
Aaand.. the car performed faultlessly, one of those great race meetings where all we had to do was put fuel in, check levels and pressures and clean the screen!
All in all, a wonderful time. We were treated to the same standard as the celebs, hospitality et al, Stars for two days! Although I have to admit, I wouldn't want the level of attention, verging on harassment which they get all day long.
