CA folks, got an E-mail that already 407 SB-100

Somethings are never easy! A friend of mine purchased an used CAV. He replaced the motor and tranny and just about 1 week back, went to the local Calif. DMV with Meats instructions in hand and went for his SB100 title. Great he got in at about number 250, paid his money and was sent down to the Calif. Highway patrol office for verification. Wonder of wonders - some one had tried once unsuccessfuly for an Alabama title and a second time successfully. Unfortunately none of his sales paper work showed this. He had a bill of sale and an MSO from CAV - all showing the proper vin#. But, says the CHP, this car already existed under an Alabama Title. They won't issue him clearance for that vin# until he proves that there isn't another car with that vin#. Moral of this story - Be carful. Calif. is really clamping down on Alabama type title operations and are planning on going back as much as 15 years to search records. Probably looking more for sales tax revenue than fraudulent titles. Also if you buy somebdy elses kit, finished or not, make sure you no the title history even if it is not currently road registered. Who knows how long and how many conversations with the CHP investigator this one will take and this guy was being honest and above board.
