Check out Factory Fives new car.

I like the fact that it has structure up in the roof - essentially an integral cage. At 2100 pounds with an LS1 or an LS6 engine it should go like stink.

It'll be interesting to see where they route the exhaust.

I also wonder what the torsional rigidity is...those triangular elements look pretty big to me. The web site claims the chassis is stiffer than any other FFR car, but I don't know if that's saying much.

Mark, that really says a lot. The ffr frame is one of the strongest if not the best in the cobra industry. However, that beast is butt-ugly in my mind. I think the ultima looks a lot better! Maybe with a little welding a nice gt40 body will fit on that chassis! Now THAT would be worthwhile. Hmmm....maybe I should have waited......... ;o)

Saw the car in person today. Everyone has their own views, but I think it looks fantastic.

I like the style and you can bet it will be priced as low as possible. The Smith brothers are a class act and they really try to keep the quality up and the price down. I was just hoping that they could have used the tranny from the C5 as well. I guess it would be way to long even with a shortened torque tube.

I could be very wrong with this, but I thought that the Vette's rear-mounted transaxle was only with the automatic, the 6-speed is still a traditional "bolted to the engine" tranny?

Again, I could be wrong,

But, still it's a nice looking car, and I can't wait to see how it pans out.

Nope, the C5 uses a transaxle connected to the engine
via torque tube. We discussed this many moons ago (maybe
even on the first iteration of the GT40s board /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ).
That transaxle is waaaaay long ... the engine would have
to be in the passenger seat to be used in a 40.

Bummer though ... it can handle gobs of torque and has
some pretty good ratios ...

Forgot to mention that they are shooting for a price point
of under $45K US to build the complete car. That includes
purchasing the kit and the C5 parts/donor, as well as a
G50 transaxle.

Ian

I'm just wondering how many wrecked/used up C5's are out there to be used as donor cars. These don't get a ton of miles and one thats wrecked is probably not going to be so usable. Seen any cheap used 'vettes of the latest model?

They come up occasionally on ebay. Search for corvette suspension. Can't remember the prices they were getting, but I do know they aren't cheap.

I can tell you for a fact that wheel bearing/hub assemblies for C5's are $500 each...I am trying to find a better price right now on that very part.
A used front suspension set up can be had for $1500-2000,
the front and rear uprights are the same part with a tie rod on the rears for toe adjustment.
cscott67 has C5 parts on his car....

Hey, it's only money! ;o) The problem is you will have to buy a whole car. 8-15k for a clunker with a blown motor and a zillion miles. The front-ends are VERY hard to find seperate. But, the older hard tops are cheap and plentiful, Scott

I think it is a pretty good car. Good drivetrain and parts, that is for sure, and I bet it will race well.

I don't know about cheap though. Where I live the junkyards know what a C5 is and the price is steep. So, I don't think anyone will be getting drivetrains without spending some serious dough. I read the post above about one fellow getting a good price but I think that is going to be the exception, not the norm, for wrecked C5 bits.

Look forward to seeing them on the road, I think the Smith's brothers have done a good thing!
