Crash at Reno

I was not specifically responding to you Nick, no worries.

Just the generality that threads don't seem to stay on topic for very long.

Scott,

No problem, I think someone on the forum put forward the theory that if you could get past the 2nd page without thread drift or Goodwin's law coming into effect you are doing well.

Blast, this post is now a thread drift of the original thread drift, sorry :(

Bill Whittle made the most calm and collected statement I have heard in a long time. He didn't single out the Nazi party, he used it as one of several examples of societies that had governments that existed with the principle that they knew what was best for it's citizens. He did not say that the people refered to specificly called for the banning of the air races. He did say the stated people and people like them liked to ban things in general that might be, in their opinion, bad for the general population. All very calm and reasoned thought. I found his comments to be right on. So my only comment might be "Jimmy Craiked corn and I don't care, your masters going away".

Bud,

You are right, this fella speaks very softly and is very pleasant tp listen to. Quite frankly, was enjoying his the on the crash, he was absolutly correct.

It's only when he started to bring in Maddow, Oberman, Moore and others, then tallied about loosing freedoms. From there, he talked about the danger liberals, you know. Then cut to a Natzi flag, mention that Hitler was a socialist.......

Bud you may have thought this was just a good American talking of an air crash, you are not very observant.

Bud, you say that

Say Bud, during his conversation about the air race tragedy, when he repeatedly brough up Maddow, Oberman and Moore and talked of liberals wanting to ban things we love.

Bud, you say that even though he mentioned them several times by name, he really did not mean that Maddow, Oberman and Moore wanted to ban air racing.

You then said: "people like them liked to ban things in general that might be, in their opinion, bad for the general population:

Bud, since there is no evidence that they want to ban air racing, could you please give me some examples of things that Maddow, Oberman and Moore do want to ban?

I went back and listened again to Mr Whittle, he absolutly said the Rachal Maddow and people like her will treat us like children and deside what is best for us like, calling for a ban of the air races...............

That just is not true.

He also said the the pilots seat collapsed, there is no evidence to show that, the seat on Voodoo did not collapse.

He also said that the race planes spend virtually the whole race at "high angles of attack" that is not true, that causes drag, they use as little angle of attack as possible.

This guy talks so softly and smoothly that it's hard to realize that he is the worst kind of talking head. Using this terrible accident and lies to further his hate filled agenda.

The worst part is that many good, smart folks here took what he said as fact, even defending him.

Back to the string:

I was sent the following note about the race accident. Some of it didn't make sense in that if the aircraft gets more nose down pitch force with speed, then why would...

Our new crew member, Matt Jackson, is not only a race pilot, aircraft
business owner and aircraft owner (he also takes care of Tom Cruises P-51)
but he is also the VP of the Unlimited Racing Class and head of the Safety
Committee.

We had a long talk about the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Reno</st1:place></st1:City> crash on the way to Mojave today.

Matt believes the cause of the crash was due to The Galloping Ghost having a
CG too close to the aft limit which resulted in pitch instability. There are
instructions on the P-51 regarding no combat missions with the aft fuel tank
full resulting in an aft CG problem. Instructions specify to empty the aft
fuel tank first in flight.

During qualifying Matt watched Galloping Ghost from inside the cockpit of
Furias and could not believe how much trouble Leeward was having in keeping
the Ghost in a stable pattern around the course.

Since Leeward lives in <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Florida</st1:place></st1:State> and the Galloping Ghost was modified for
racing in <st1:State w:st="on">Calif.</st1:State>, when Leeward picked up the Ghost for the <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Reno</st1:place></st1:City> races at the
last minute, a complete flight test program had not been done based on
available information.

There is a video of the entire last lap of the Ghost before the crash which
Matt showed me. As Leeward was coming around pylon #8 at about 480 mph after passing Rare Bear, he hit turbulence which pitched his left wing down,
Leeward corrected with hard right rudder and aileron. Just as the aircraft
was straightening out, he hit a second mountain of turbulence which caused
the tail to 'dig in' resulting in a 10+ G climb rendering Leeward
unconscious instantly and resulted in the tail wheel falling out. (broken
tail wheel support structure was found on the course). As the Ghost shot
upward the LH aileron trim tab broke loose. This can be heard on the tape,
so the trim tab did not cause the accident.

Since the Ghost was racing at 480 mph with full right rudder and the stick
full right, this is where everything stayed when Leeward blacked out.
Cockpit camera film that was salvaged from the wreck shows Leeward slumped
over to the right in the cockpit. As a result, the Ghost climbed up and to
the right, rolled over on her back and then headed for the box seats. Most
in the box seats never saw it coming because it came in from behind them.

Matt has had long conversations with the NTSB who call the accident a
'fluke'. They are not going to recommend canceling future races. He has also
talked to the insurance companies covering the races for <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Reno</st1:place></st1:City> and they also
say they are not going to cancel their coverage of future races. Now we wait
for the FAA to make a decision.

Ironically, Matt had bought box seats tickets for his good friends who stayed
with him for a few days before the races. They were the husband and wife who
were killed.
