Door Painting

I have painted my inner doors with primer and am about to give them a few coats of satin black. Once done, I will leave the doors a week or two before flatting out with 1200 W&D to get an even and smooth colour and texture. Should I also give it a final over-paint with clear coat to protect the surface, or is this only necessary if you want a ‘shinny’ finish (which I am not looking for)?

Hi Ian,
if the primered surface is OK, I've generally found that the finish from rattle can satin black is very good and doesn't need any extra flatting or sealing with clear coat.

better off getting them painted using solid 2k as the paint from cans will chip as it is brittle and thin. better bet is to go to your local paint supplier and get them to mix you up a can of the colour of your choice. cost is around £13 a can, but much better than off the shelf cans.

I disagree with the need for a 2K paint. The key to good paint adhesion is good preparation, so as long as the surface has been degreased, the paint will not flake or chip off. I’m not a paint specialist, but I’ve never had rattle can paint flaking when the preparation has been done properly.

On the inside of the spider I have in the past hand painted with a brush but the body I have is a sought of crinkle finish from the mould so smoothness is not required. My old GTD40 of 2000 is still as good a when it went on.
The doors are also of this finish but I will have these 2k matt black.
Andy is right it shouldn't flake but 2k will not and while there at the bodyshop it's just a bit of work.
My spider inside will be hand painted again.
