DVLA Engine Change

I did not know if this is the right section to ask my question but here goes anyway. I am finishing off my KVA and one of the changes made included the removal of the 3.5 L Rover v8 engine and the installation of a 4.5 L Rover v8 (1998 engine if that makes a difference!). Could anyone advise what I need to do regarding the DVLA. How do you go about advising them that this increase in CC has been done. Is there any porblems I am going to encounter becuase I have made this change?
The car was originally built in 1991 so I am hoping there will be no issues regarding the UK SVA. Please, any help you can give would put my mind at rest because I am a bit worried now!!

Regards

Simon

Hi Simon
To the best of my knowledge I believe you just have to fill in the new details in section 7 of your V5C (log book) and send it to the DVLC.
Does anyone know any different?
Don't forget to notify your insurance company.

Are you sure Brian, it's so easy like that?

same thing when we pass 302ci to 351ci?

I have changed engines in vehicles in the past and that is all I had to do although that was a few years ago. I am sure if the KVA had been fitted with a 4.5L engine originally it would have been registered just the same. The year of the engine might affect the MOT though.

Brian.

According to my SVA manual (published in 1996!) the magic dates are:
Pre 1/8/75 (no test required, AKA black smoke test)
Pre 1/8/86 <1200 HC (ppm) and 4.5 CO (%) at idle
Pre 1/8/95 <1200 HC (ppm) and 3.5 CO (%) at idle
Post 1/8/95 various limits, implies CAT needed.

if you declare a 1998 engine seems you will need a CAT or EFI MIGHT work??

As I said my book is nearly 10 years old (cripes!), so get the latest version.

I don't know if the DVLA record the need for an emissions test on their database. Now that MOT tests MUST be done on-line (the old hand written certificates are being phased out this year on the grounds of the tendency for fraud/invalid issues) the garage might have no choice but to test. I have successfully put mine though this July and have a new computerised certificate. I simply told the tester it was an old engine and he skipped the test.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

After doing some research it looks like Brian is quite correct, the DVLA must be informed by returning the log book with the change details. I have also been asked to provide proof of purchase for the new engine, no problem. I perhaps should have looked into this situation a bit sooner but there you go. As far as emissions for a newer engine goes I will have to do some more research. If a cat must be installed then so be it. My Griff 500 has got cats and still sound great!

Many thanks all

Simon

If your car was registered in 1991, then I would imagine the newer engine is not relevant for cat emmissions. Just go along with the 1991 emmissions. After all, if you have a 1988 Astra and put a new engine in it, you don't have to retrofit cats. Do you?
