There used to be a great website for the history of Ford v8 engines that included cutaway drawings of the various flavors with the crucial areas annotated with dimensions: lifter bores, cam journals, main journals, valve stem diameters, oiling systems- the whole 9 yards.
I just tried the website, http://www.waldens.com, but it timed out. The page I had bookmarked was the beginning of the Windsor family of engines: http://www.waldens.com/fmotorsp.htm. I don't know if it is temporarily down or if it is now gone :-(
