I found this link on Google. It's an old parts listing/manual for updating the GT40 289 engine to 'Lemans specs'. I hope this posts.

No part numbers given for the revised crankshaft or 4 bolt main block. Did that happen or did it morph into the Boss 302?

Engine Block Casting # is just above starter on a pad about 1.5" above pan/sump surface.

IIRC there were some early 'production' Boss302 blocks that were less desireable than others, I just checked in my Boss 302 data & there is no actual p/n listed for the block or cranks ( I know there were two if not three versions of the crank for the Boss alone ) Without a ford parts book from that period its rather difficult to pin down numbers as when stuff was obsoleted or superceded it often meant the original page in the book was to be discarded. Jay Cushmans site lists some p/n's, but if your not familiar with how things evolved its a bit difficult to trace stuff.

There is some doubtful info in those specs
-- balancing bobweights are speced at 760gm in sedan specs & 1780.9gms in GT40 section plus GT40 Flywheel is (((9.8 oz/in @180°26'??))) [ presumably a misprint as the 1780 gm figure is around the correct # for those components]
-- Only the #1.2.4.5 4 bolt cap pn's are listed-- none for center main. ( Now over the years I have seen several 'ordinary' 2 bolt 289 blocks with provision in the main webs for the outer bolt of the 4 bolt main caps. This would suggest that caps were fitted to 'these' blocks & as John points out it might have morphed into the Boss 302 block at later date with other mod's like screw in core plugs.

I think the '60 and '70 cranks were different-- one was cross drilled and the other not. I've got an old Ford HP and Boss parts book somewhere out in the garage. I'll take a look and if they have any interesting pns I'll post 'em tomorrow.

Yes,
The 60 and sone early 70s were cross drilled, that went away for 1970. The Boss blocks carry C8, C9, D0 and D1 casting codes. Ford had probl;ems with piston skirts cracking and many original blocks were damaged beyond use as a result. Many cars carry "D1" replacement blocks for engines rebuilt under warranty. Eventually Ford authorized use of TWR forged pistons at dealers to solve the problem but never used them in production. The Boss 302 block makes a great "small block" with a stout lower end. The "new" current production Boss blocks are even better. I have the period parts manuals if anyone needs parts or engineering numbers.

I found these casting numbers listed in an old Ford parts book. I hadn't ever heard of the '69 Boss crank throws being hollowed but it was noted for the '69 and not the '70. Perhaps that's why the balancers had different numbers.

From my Vade Mecum :

1966 289 Race Block and 351 heads are prefix : C6FE

1968 302 Race part numbers are :

C8FE 6010 B : Racing Block
C8FE 6300 A : Crank Shaft ~ cross drilled / 180 deg. oiling
XE1423956 : Pistons
C8FE 6316 B : Damper
C8FE 6375 B : Flywheel

Given that the 'latest' pn's start with C7**- its safe to assume that the document was printed in 1967/68. Now take a close look at the 'new' crank photo, the third counterweight in from each end is a full 1/2 circle--- production cranks have only one 'ear' of that 1/2 circle. That plus the 1967 C7FE part # on Johns early 1969 Boss crank would suggest that the same bare forging would have been used to produce both cranks as the stroke difference is only 0.125".
The hollow crank throws would have only have allowed for the extra weight of the 'Indy' rods at best & you had to allow for the oil weight component in the cavity when balancing as well.

Just from curiosity: will the Boss 302 block that Ford now makes accept Windsor heads, or do you have to use Cleveland heads? If you want to build a high-output Windsor engine, what is the best new block to use, and what is the best aluminum block if you're feeling flush with money?

The original boss block would accomadate the winsor heads. The boss heads were actually different from regular cleveland heads. They moved a water passage from the deck surface of the head to the manifold flange. See if you can google up a company called track boss. They used to supply manifolds for the cleveland head on the windsor block. The new boss engines come with the windsor heads.
