GT40 replica prices

It seems sadly (for owners at least) that the prices of GT40 replicas, well at least those in the UK, has plummeted in the past few months. Stories of unsold cars with specialist dealers are being told and just today, a very respectable and correctly registered GTD40 was sold at the Bonhams auction at Goodwood for just 40K (plus an arm and a leg for buyers/sellers fees).
The upside is hopefully the speculators and dealers may think twice and hopefully the real enthusiasts will come back into the market........not much comfort if you’re trying to sell I know.
Easy to blame Brexit for everything I know, but in this case.....maybe?

Good point, entirely possible. however the replica market in general (and by that I mean Cobras) is suffering so I'm told. I think people are just wary about parting with their hard earned at this time on uncertainty. After all....nobody NEEDS a GT40 or Cobra replica....however much we WANT one. Hopefully things will improve as the year progresses.

As I see it (not that it matters), the final cost of building a new replica GT40 these days probably has more than a little bit to do with the market softening. $200+K USD is easily the norm these days - even if one is 'cutting reasonable corners' where ever possible.

As I've mentioned a time or two previously, for that amount of money one can buy other cars that will blow a GT40 off the road...and they have a full manufacturer's warranty...with a dealership service department backing it! Annnnnnnd one can have one of those in the driveway within 3-4-5 months as opposed to years. Some literally do not have the TIME to wait "years".

Dave's point about potential buyers getting older and fewer is every bit as valid.........................unfortunately...and ties into the "time" factor I mentioned above. :-(

What's that? $52500? Fair price for a standard GTD...……….is it not? I paid $34K for my kit, put in a $5K crate motor, had the GRBX upgraded (1 piece input shaft, taller 1st and 2nd, Quaife TBD, for $6K, Wilwood brakes for 1.5K, 17" wheels 1.5K, 1K paint, and an assorted few thousand dollars worth of other stuff.

Ya that's about right...…………….50-53ish...……..and mine is sorted with a lot of time in suspension and setup work to make it work. Would I sell it for $55K ? Not now, I still want it, but that would be a fair price.

Other manufactures are different in that they are more refined and more recent but it still comes down to a sum of the parts value. Your hobby time building it is worth nothing and the sooner you get over that, the better. If you paid someone else to build it then you did that to save YOUR time and that is a convenience fee that you paid so you could do something else. Kind of like going on a guided hunt where you have the guide find the deer, carry your gun, then dress it and carry it back to the lodge after you shoot it.

What other hobby can you get your money back when you are done with it? What's a 10 year old dirt bike worth? Golf clubs? Skis, tennis rackets? At least you don't have to give your GT40 away to the goodwill.

Oh and I was wondering what $53K new car could blow the doors off my GTD? Apples and apples my friend...……………………….

Its up for $91,000 now Howard, even with our shocking exchange rate that is still quite top end I guess. no great pictures of the engine bay either.
But do agree not many hobbies you can do, play with and sell at the end and not lose or even make

I hope he gets a 100 grand...…………...You put a buyer and a seller together and you have a price...…………...they are all different. But I have to tell you if I had a real, no BS, in my pocket offer of 91K, I would be rethinking if I wanted to keep it.

It would be tempting for sure, they always say the second time you do something you have learnt so much from the first, think of all the head scratching you would save :)

It was a strange afternoon at that auction, I expected to see more people there.
Besides with the GTD there was also a DT Pantera which went for £45K, not sure about values of these but I thought is was cheap compared to that GTD hammer price.

Howard, it's at a dealers so an offer of $91k would buy it. Businesses have to make a profit but that seems a big markup for driving it home, and looking at the other cars they have for sale they are not short of a bob or two. I think it's a shame a private enthusiast was not able to get it at the auction for $52k,

I will be interested to see what that price that "dealer" finally gets. I assume the public was there, just no buyers I guess.

I am surprised at the title of the thread. I actually thought prices have gone up over the past 8 years (since I sold mine); at least here in the US. From my limited research it seems like the SPF, CAV, GTDs, RCRs, etc have held relatively stable. That said, I am happy to be wrong

They have.
About 8-or-10 years ago, one could pick up a really nice used, low mile Heritage livery SPF GT40 MKI (as well as others) for around $110K USD.
Google a NICE car like that today and you'll see $179K to $225K or more being asked.

Yeah, cheaper ones can be found, BUT...
