So I just finished putting in a Quaife one piece mainshaft in my UN1, so why would they not do that on their own design as I would think that would be stronger?
Could be a clearance or assembly issue with the transaxle that demands that a certain design of shaft is used. Ie if it has to be assembled a certain way, and have bearings pressed on from a particular end, then that limits the size of the spline you can put on the shaft. It may be something as simple as clearance to the differential center that limits the ability to place a female splined section next to the outer diameter of the deferential carrier.
