Hi from Canberra, Australia

I've been lurking on these forums for a little while, thought it was time I registered.

I'm pondering building a GT40 over the next couple of years as my new car - I've not grown up with V8's but do have a hankering to own one.

I'm a BMW nut, and my current car has had quite a bit of work done 'improving' it - including the supercharger that went on 4 years ago. This now creates a problem - I've had the car 7 years, thoroughly enjoy it, but it has more poke than a stock M3. If I want a nimble BMW V8, it would be the new M3, and that's a fair bit of coin to waste on a depreciating asset. I'm handy enough to get myself in a whole mess of trouble, hence pondering something which is such a classic, and not at all common on the street - heck, it might actually hold some value!

I've also heard tell that there is a green GT40 living near Canberra which turns up at 'Marques in the Park' - if anybody knows the owner, would it be possible to put them in contact with me? - it would be great to see a real live GT40.

Welcome to the forum Simon.

Sorry can't help with the owner of the green GT40 in Canberra. Maybe someone else can help with a Canberra based GT40.

If not, plenty of events you could attend to see GT40 replicas. Just about any Cobra Club meeting, especially QLD Cobra Club. Also most sprint race meets up here in QLD. Also the Cobra Nationals at Wakefield Park in October. And some car shows. You might even get to see an original GT40 if you are lucky.

Supercharged BMW, I like the way you think. GT40 replicas have traditionally increased in value over the years in Australia. So in some respects one of the better cars to get involved in here in Aus. And as you say, the GT40 is definitely a classic.

Simon i think the green gt40 you are speeking of was built by DRB at yatala Qld, some other forum members from that way should fill in some gaps for you. If not ring Peter at DRB i am sure he can help identify the car.

Thanks for the welcomes!

Jim: - Nice engines indeed, but compared to FI Jap cars/V8's, the euro's are a bit undrpowered. There are a couple of turbo/Supercharged M3's getting around Canberra at the moment. I like your work shown on the website BTW - sound like some really hand parts for GT40's

Craig: - Thanks for the heads up about the Cobra Nationals in October - sounds like a must see. I tried to call on Thursday/ended up sending you an email - I'm heading towards an RCR-40 - not having to bend and fit 63+ ally panels is sounding attractive (and highest respect forthose who have done so). Would it be possible to arrange a visit to the RCR facility in QLD?

Darrell:- Thanks for pointing me in the right direction - I don't want to impose on indivudal members, but it would be good to see one in the flesh to crosscheck that this is not just a momentary stupid idea! I normally go to Wheels/German Autofest with the BMW club, but have never been to 'Marques in the Park'

No problem Simon with a visit to the factory up here. Just let me know. My phone diversion hasn't been working well this week. I've now got it sorted so should be much easier to contact again when I'm on the run. I'm also behind on my emails, should get through the last batch today and be up-to-date again. I'll keep an eye out for yours.

All I can recommend is make sure you check out all the kits on offer and choose the one that suits you best.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes Wakefield Park at Goulbourn New South Wales, is not a great distance for you to travel and is well worth the visit.

Also the Shelby Fest which is now only 8 days away - Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Winton. Worth a visit to see Cobras, GT40 and Mustangs.

All going well with the final bolt together, finishing the night before, I'll have my 90% finished GT40 there.

Cheers

Bernie

Hi Bernie - thanks for the welcome, and congrats on getting so far along with your GT40.

Craig - I think I need to do that business trip to the Gold Coast to see the clients that I actually do have up there. The finance package is sounding very attractive for a turnkey, and I think I have a timeframe with the business that will be the trigger to proceed with an order. Out of curiosity, what sort of timeframes are we looking at for a turnkey build?
