Looks like a typical aftermarket alloy street head. The low end flow is lagging a bit compared to Trickflow TFS and AFR 185 heads. It would be a good head for a street motor. Capable of max HP of about 400-425.

JEGS heads

The JEGS heads have some distinct advantages, not the least of which is the use of canted valve design. Anyone who has driven Ford's Cleveland design motors knows about the smooth torque curve the canted valve design yields. Perhaps the biggest benefit I saw with the JEGS heads was the ability to use already available intake and exhaust components--no need to go off looking for one-off parts or adaptors to make the combination bolt together.

As I considered heads to build my motor, the JEGS heads were a distant second place. I want something that will yield not only performance but also give me "...the look". The problem I saw with the JEGS heads involved the required valve covers--due to the canted valve design and the height of the rockers there is not available a SBF design valve cover that will give enough clearance (with the exception of some exotic designs with a removable top plate and spacers, and who knows where to find those?), so your only option is what looks like a stamped steel valve cover with JEGS in big letters. Those JEGS valve covers did not give me "...the look", though.

In the end "..the look" was important enough to me, despite the great reviews that the JEGS heads have received, so I decided to use a regular aftermarket Cleveland style head and now have to deal with finding an intake manifold to match the combination. Life does have it's burdens!

I am not an engine person but the 170 cc seems it will be a lower compression engine than say a 164 cc set of heads? What CR will you get from these heads? I have found my 10.5 to 1 to be very reliable.

They don’t look like very good heads to me. I guess if you are getting a really good deal then they might be worth it, but if you are buying them new from Jegs then don’t bother. Jegs have them listed as $550 each. You would be better off going with the Edelbrock Performer RPM heads at $530 each or spend a little more money and get the Victor JR heads for $630

Here is a link to the flow chart for all of the Edelbrock heads…

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/heads/pdf/flow_data.pdf

The part # for the Performer RPM is #60259 and the Victor JR is #77189 you can see that both will out flow the Jeg heads the (Victor jr by a lot). So either save some money and make more power with the RPMs, or spend a little more and make a lot more power with the JRs.

Not sure!?

Doug,
I think you are talking abou the Jegs/Kase heads? These are just the normal ones. Do you know if these have canted valves as well?

Brett

You are correct--I was speaking of the JEGS/KASE heads. I was searching for canted valve options and didn't search the standard JEGS heads. Since J. Kase has made his reputation with the canted valve heads, I doubt that the standard JEGS heads would have the canted valves.

Have you considered the JEGS/KASE heads? As I said, there is no problem with chasing strange intake manifolds, etc., like the "small port Boss 302" I'm building, as the KASE heads use the standard SBF intake and exhaust products.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I would encourage you to consider the KASE heads--the motors J. Kase has entered into the competitions post great numbers and the canted valve designs sure do smooth out the torque curve!!!

CHI?

Brett, have you had a look at CHI?
From what I've seen they look a pretty good option and well worth a look.
I'd be really interested if anyone here has used or know anything solid (not second hand) about these?

Ive built one 351c with the CHI heads, it has done one seasons circuit racing, road course, at club level to date with a hyd cam & a 7000 rpm limit. No problems at all to date and turns equal lap times to a 383 chev powered car. Both are Ford Capri's of similar vintage and specification. Early days yet but from a quality point of view the heads were as good as any i have seen from the US. The one advantage these have over the SVO heads is the ex headers share the same bolt pattern as the standard 351c.
