My 1,001st Post

Given that I just made my 1,000th post to the forum, I thought it might be time to write an intro.

My father has been a car person since he was a child and I got some of that from him along with his Lotus Seven that he bought new in 1967. My first car was the family's old Dodge Dart. My second car (a graduation gift) was a then 20 year old Lotus Elan (I still have it). My daily driver in the summer is a 2018 Ford Mustang with a four cylinder turbo engine and the performance package (track pack). It's a fun car for cloverleafs and the track days. For towing and winter driving, I have a 2010 Toyota Tundra.

My first first exposure to a GT40 was in 1969 when I was offered a ride by David Carroll in his Mk I road car, 1058. It was a short ride and I sat on my mother's lap for it.

In 1994, my father found an ad for a GT40 in Hemmings (a US car magazine that's mostly car ads) and suggested that I get it. We went to the GT40 reunion at Road America in Wisconsin. While there, we looked at what was for sale and talked to some people (including Ronnie Spain) to verify the car's history. While standing at the side of the road watching the traditional parade of race cars through the town, we called the seller in California and arranged to purchase the car. Next, I went to California and took the car for a test drive on the local roads.. It was a blast and I was very happy to complete the purchase. So for nearly 26 years, I am the proud owner of GT40 P/1030.

Quick History: 1030 was completed as a rolling chassis in 1965 and then in 1967 it was finished as a "semi-road car" along with three others (1025, 1035, and 1036) for the infamous Shell ad. 1030 was never seriously raced, so it is a very original car. (I'm not sure the photo of it at a dragstrip with a CanAm car in the next in Australia counts as evidence of racing) You may have seen 1030 while it was painted red in the Ford ad "Would you want your daughter to marry a Ford owner", but it's back to it's original light blue.

And just in case anyone is wondering, as long as I'm having fun driving the car, I have no plans to sell it.

Hi Ben

Great to hear your story. I remember visiting you with Brian McCarthy many years ago and you kindly showed us your cars and then took me for a ride in 1030. Fabulous. Do you still have the cortina and escort tucked away? I recall your wife had a room dedicated to her pet rats. Hope none escaped!

Glad you still have fond memories of the ride.

The Cortina was sold nearly 10 years ago at a Goodwood auction and I sold the Escort when I got the Mustang. I still have the other cars.

My wife still has pets rats. One of the current batch is extremely friendly and will run up your arm to sit on your shoulder if given a chance.
