Good morning. Just joined this group after many years of reading and dreaming about owning a GT40. I recently sold one of my race cars so the wife has green lit another project.

I guess the first piece of advice I’ll seek from this group is where to buy a kit? I’ve got a price list from Andy at Tornado and one from Robert at Roaring 40s. Unfortunately I think I’ll be paying a 27.5 percent tariff on those so they may be a difficult pill to swallow.

Reached out to the sales team at RCR but I haven’t heard back and I’ve also read that he’s over a year out on delivery. I can wait but would love to hear from someone who’s been a recent customer.

I also did the 100 dollar deposit with Sal over at GenZ 40s. He’s responsive and I’m going to try and get a solid quote and BOM for all the parts to do a complete build at home.

I’m not looking to build a race car. I have those already. I just want a street car with AC and a stereo but also RHD with 15” wheels for some accuracy. Likely will be a 289 and either an Audi 01E, Boxster S or the new tremec transaxle.

I did and just got an email back, again the 27.5 tax on imports just sucks right now on anything from the UK. I'm so glad that wasn't the case when I was building my race cars (BMW, MGB and Jaguar) as lots of parts came from abroad.

Welcome to GT40’s Andrew. There’s tons of information and very talented builders on this forum. Read through some of the build logs. Take your time and do research before you part with any of your hard earned money. Please read back through about a bunch of forum members loosing money with the early Roaring 40’s company with Robert Logan. There are a lot of companies out there willing to take your money. There are a lot of reputable companies also. Just do your research.
Thank You for being a forum supporter .

Please enjoy the forum !!!

Thanks Brian. I am doing just that! So far I have to admit I like certain things about the RCR (aluminum frame and uprights). But I’m also keen on the completeness of the Tornado and they offer a 100 percent complete kit.

Awesome! I'll have to make a point to come visit at some point. I'm going to go take a look at Earl's projects out in Grosebeck next week as well. I'll take some pictures to try and help him sell them.

Andrew welcome to the forum. If you are ever out in west Texas passing thru or near Abilene let me know and you can come by to see my project as well. Hoping to finish up the major work on body alignment and fasteners/panel gaps once this cold weather clears out hopefully next week.

Already had a nice chat with Dr Bob. He’s a fan of the Tornado and honestly so am I. Andy has been super helpful thus far and his rep is beyond reproach on delivery.

AK40 is similar and their USA agent is out of New Hampshire and the their kit even uses the correct 6 pin hubs. Complete build box is however about 20 percent more than a Tornado. It is setup for the ZF/Quaife vice the UN1.

Ideally would like to find a kit someone has given up on.

MGB V8? I have a 69 that I just finished restoring. It’s a 4cyl but it’s a 13.5:1 1950cc so gets around pretty good. . Street legal but also can pass tech at any vintage race. It will probably be at Eagles Canyon in March for SVRA.

Yes a Rover 3.5 I built 30 yrs ago and she still will scare you sometimes.

I went with Southern GT (AK40) vs Tornado for several reasons. I liked the brake set up was one of them. If I had to do over I would have gone with the Quaife vs the UN1 and put the engine 1” lower in the chassis. By the time you upgrade a UN1 you are near the price of the Quaife.

I B run the grid

Very cool. I was there in 23 with the B but sadly the motor blew.

I will say the AK40 does have superior brakes but the price does reflect that.

If you are the MGB motor that Vilas built last year then John can get you in touch with Sean Tinnel in College Station who has an RCR.

Always nice to see another GT40 or one being built in Texas. There are not a ton of them in the state but I know of two real ones in the north Dallas area and a couple real ones in the Houston area. Also a Holman & Moody GT40, couple SPF GT40 several ERA GT40s and a Tornado GT40 in the state. I have a CAV GT40 up in Prosper, Texas. Hope you land on one to build or as you probably know several unfinished kits show up on this for sale forum all the time. Good Luck!

Andrew,

Who is telling you it will be 27.5% import tariff/duty from the UK? The kit should be tariffed under auto parts as it is an incomplete car (less engine & transaxle) which should then be tariffed at 10% + 2.5% duty. The key is for the vendor to use the correct HTS codes.

Julien. I’ve heard 12.5 and 27.5 again based on the codes used. I have talked to some folks and should be good if I import a kit.

Gary, thanks I’m just down near Waco in the country. My group A vintage car is gone so really jonesing to get one soon but also trying to be patient. Several cars available north of 150k but I feel that’s a bit strong given the current economy so I’ll wait. Cars under 100k seem to move quickly so that tells me where the market is.

I grew up around the real cars as my dad had a friend that raced a few in the 80s and 90s before they became insane money.
