Number plates

Look what turned up at the shop today, one of the very first cars ever to be given an English registration number, two fantastic cars which we still had to get through the Ministry of Transport test and inspection this morning. Frank

Frank, fantasic photos! But, having lived in England and knowing that "personalized" plates while literally a dime a dozen over here are not so cheap over there want to hazard a guess as to what that AA 1 plate might be worth. Some in these parts might find it not only enlightening but also staggering. Is is still the practice that once a registration plate is issued with the car it stays with the car for life? I recall seeing a Ford Scorpio coming out of London once and the registration was 1F. Love those "brass" cars.

AA1 has a bit of history. It was first owned by a Lady Chatsworth, Queen Victoria,s Lady-in- Waiting. When Victoria was in mourning for her husband, the Prince Regent, it was not deemed appropriate that she should be seen with any form of enjoyment, particularly to be seen drinking, so on any trips made by the Queens party the side wicker baskets on AA1 seen in the pictures carried champagne etc and was driven by the Lady in Waiting a set way behind the Queens carriage. The car insured is for $1M, and if ever sold would be expected to readily exceed that figure. Frank
