Hi James and all, I havent done over 200mph in a GT40 replica, but i got close in GTD's old Lola T70 mk3b in Germany once.
When I worked for GTD back in 1991 I think, I had to take the Lola over to do a Swedish Show in Gothenburg. It is a very amusing story but would take ages to type it all so im saving it for my memoirs! Though this extract is totally as it happened.
like i said earlier on my way to a show in Gothenburg. i had to drive 5 hours to harwich from Bournemouth. On a North sea crossing to Hamburg. Drive from Hamburg to Travemunde on the north German Coast and then another boat to Sweden. it was on the German Leg from Hamburg that my ordeal happened.
I was late arriving in Hamburg as the weather delayed the boat by four hours or more. But I still had five hours to get to Travemunde. Its about 200 miles i think. Mostly three to five lane Autobahn. Now you can knock the Germans for many things, but the Roads are always in good condition and fast. I pushed up to 140 in the Lola no problem, stable, Fun. Long straights and Long slow bends. hardly any traffic. Great. Then i had an idea pop into my head. The lola had taller tyres on than a Forty. The engine was Ray Christophers old race car lump and a pretty sound unit. Now I thought that the top speed should be around 170 and wanted to know what that was like.
After a few up to 150 then 160 i backed off. Then pushed up to 165. Every five miles per hour feels like 50 at that speed. I felt brave and the car felt good, time to face the music. I was slowly pushing up to and then beyond 170. Wow this is the first time for me. Huge adrenalin rush. I felt like a dog on heat. Brave and cocky at the same time. I topped 175 then 180. I was amazed and when i saw the sign saying Travemunde 30 klicks away, I thought I wanted to push some more. So I came off the Autobahn and headed back the way i came for another go!
Id just got on the straight where Id achieved 180 and thought its now or never. The car felt good and solid. The lola being more down force dynamic than a forty, helped keep me on the track, I mean road! I took the mean lady to 185 then 187 and just as I was about to put the pedal right down, i noticed a long slip road tree lined, just the type German police hide in. Sure enough they were there. After I very hard brake session, but controlled, I slowed to 135 real quick! They came out pulled along side me at 110mph! They were nosing forward looking for a race! I kinda smiled and pulled off a the next services. Looking for a strong coffee!
They came in and after a few German sear words, the driver said what the ***** that? i told him, he asked to sit in it, told me I can sit in his Porsche, but dont touch the MP5 machine gun in the door pocket! He said how fast does this car go. I said how fast does your Porsche go, he replied 172mph. Impressed I declined to tell him I just touch 187 on his patch. After much laughing, I had a boat to catch. Sweden was another story!!!
