Jag D Type Update, December 2014

The D Type is coming along nicely. The details Fran is developing are impressive.

Aluminum panels under the front clip – a nice original touch.

Note the contour of the seat backs – like the original. Cushions were held in place with big snaps. This provides the foundation for seating similar to the original. And that hole between the seat backs can be seen on the prototype!

The original was essentially an aluminum monocoque airplane on wheels. Lots of rivets. All those rivets on Fran’s D Type add to the look.

I like that aluminum instrument panel. It would look nice with black crinkle paint while the remainder of the interior remains bare aluminum.

Hard to see in the pictures, but the front suspension is all RCR machined pieces which means adjustability that could not be accomplished with original Jag parts.

Too bad I have an airplane filling up my garage.

Don't know. Good question for Fran. But if I were building one the billet parts would be my preference

Jag D Type Update, January 2015

Ryan stopped by Fran’s shop last week and snapped some pictures of the progress on the D Type.

Looks like a lot of design and construction has been completed on the front clip inside panels. I was pleased to see them being made from aluminum, adding to the original look.

Note the box tube on the right side. That is to direct air cool outside air directly to the carburetors, like the original.

The front suspension really looks good.

The aluminum instrument pod has been extended further toward the center line, providing an area for the ignition and other switches, like the original. I am glad to see the instrument pod being fabricated from aluminum.

Too bad there is an airplane filling up my garage.

I had one filling my garage too, I was hoping that I would have an RCR product in in its place by now, but the sale of it fell through last fall and open cockpit biplanes only sell in warm weather. I am hoping this spring will bring me good news and a purchase from Fran.

Just look at the welding below the dash binnacle in Chuck's third pic. That is beautiful! Like others have said, it will be very difficult to choose which car to get when its time to get one from Fran's Candy Store.

What model biplane?

Been looking at the Hatz. There were several beautiful example at OSH this year.

Rode in a Waco couple of weeks ago in Marathan, Fla. Definitely warm weather flying.

If you want authentic looking gauges for the D Type you will need to have them fabricated. Nissonger now has the patterns for dead on accurate looking copies of the originals.

Jag D Type Update, May 2015

Paid a visit to RCR to check on the progress of the D Type.

Front sub frame was powder coated to match the aluminum. The color is right and will convey the impression of the original.

The front suspension pieces look good. RCR is fabricating the upright, upper and lower A arms. Unlike using original Jag components, the RCR suspension will have adjustability. Although they don’t look exactly like original pieces, they will be hidden behind the wheel and the advantages of the new components outweigh using antique parts on a new car.

The rear suspension, brake rotors and calipers were in place. The rear calipers include a parking brake connection, which is a requirement in some states in order register the car.

Looking at Fran’s prototype, an engine was in place along with the radiator and the expansion tank. The expansion tank is a dominant item that sits between the radiator and the engine, important to the look of the engine bay on this reproduction. Although it needs to have a filler cap and other refinements added to be complete, it looks very good.

The radiator is offset to the left, as per the original, so that an oil cooler can be added in the space on the right.

A nicely upholstered seat cushion was resting in the prototype that captured the appearance of the original well.

The car should have a tight turning radius given the expected travel of the steering linkage. With a curb weight well under 2000 pounds, this has great promise as a really enjoyable car for frequent drives.

A few questions came to mind:

1-Whats the measurement from the bottom of the seat to the top of the "head rest"?

2-In the pics above, the suspension arms are machined. Is this going to be standard? (They don't look like oem parts)

3-What are the windscreen options? Full width and/or individual for the driver plus a cover over the passenger area?

Your head will be above the headrest as you are 6'5" Justin....even sitting on the floor.

A arms are now fully machined and are part of the kit...too many crazies wanted more money for used/junk jaguar parts than we can supply nice new adjustable arms.

Full screen is the standard option

Not so sure about those wire wheels he is contemplating using.
