Rebuilding an 016 transaxle

Has anybody out there atually rebuilt an 016? What are the parts recommended for replacement? Is having a manual, fctory or otherwise mandatory? Are there any special tools required? My transaxle is a '85 5N. Are these transaxles identical across the model range for a given year?

Tranny is a pretty simple rebuild, the manual is a little confusing at 1 point but when you realize what is going on, it makes sense and it can be disassembled in about 20 minutes. If rebuilding it, do the usual, all the case bearings, seals and syncros. Also there is a plug in the tailhousing that you need to butcher to remove that you have to replace.

Hey Stig - I'm picking up my 5N this weekend and probably won't be tearing it down for a month or so (need to get dimensions and other things from it first). If I ever run across anything useful I'll let you know - let me know likewise - together we'll figure this bugger out.

Someone here emailed me some information regarding the Porsche version of the 016 (thanks) - my email is unavailable at the moment so I can't even find out who it was or forward you the info right now. If you're interested I'll forward it to you or if they catch this maybe they can send you the info.

Personally, I would not do it without a manual simply because the manuals have very inportant information on backlash and endplay between various parts. This is important so when things heat up and expand under use they don't mesh too tight and kill themselves. I've rebuilt a Hewland Mk9 from a Formula Ford - simple and enjoyable task, but who knows what special tools might be required for an 016. Some manuals tell you how to make a tool if you don't have one - I would not expect factory shop manuals to though...

Where is your source for the manual?

I hav'nt gotten the manual yet. There appears to be several sources out there.I will probably get the manual tomorrow as I want to get started asap. I will keep you posted on my sources of parts and such.
