SPF GT License Plate Bracket

This note describes one method for mounting a license plate bracket to the back of the SPF GT40. Many methods are available but this one is easy and looks good. The bracket is a lighted billet aluminum unit from Speedway Motors. It's cost was about $40. A non-lighted version is available also for less $$ but may not be legal in your state.

The quality of the photos leave a great deal to be desired but hopefully you get the point how it mounts.

The unit comes with high quality stainless hardware, the only thing you will need to add are some large fender washers (available at any hardware or auto parts store) to “distribute” the load. It is very convenient to mount the frame to the wire screen on the back of the rear deck. Using the fender washers and mounting the frame close to the inboard vertical member makes for a very solid install. The frame and plate are very light weight and when mounted in this manner causes no vibration or looseness evidenced even after a few thousand miles. One additional advantage is that the frame can be removed if desired with no extra holes or sign it was ever there.

Run the red wire up into the tail light wire loom and connect it to the running light wire and solder/shrink tube the splice. You will also need to run a ground wire from one of the mounting bolts to the wire loom ground wire (brown). Again (as always) solder and shrink tube this connection. Butt connectors are rarely advised as they deteriorate over time and make troubleshooting difficult. At the point where the ground wire connects to a mounting bolt use a soldered ring terminal with shrink tube and apply a dab of dielectric grease to keep dirt and water out of the connection.
