I've met alcoholic doctors. I have also been with doctors that smoked 6 packs a day. A doctor shagged my first wife when I wasn't looking at a tea party. Another doctor regularly beat me at sailing and was the bore of the bar, but...
I never ever met a stupid one.
Four times in my miserable life, they gave me the gift of it back through their skills and dedication.

George Osborne admits UK economic recovery is taking longer than hoped
Chancellor George Osborne has conceded that the UK's economic recovery is taking longer than he had hoped, while also promising a squeeze on the richest people's taxes and pensions.
'That means yes, the richest have to bear their fair share and they will. That does mean more than they are paying at the moment.
Meanwhile, more funds will be provided for the UK authorities to tackle tax avoidance by multinationals, Mr Osborne has announced.
That comes following controversy after it emerged big firms including Starbucks, Google and Amazon pay little or no corporation tax in the UK.
Starbucks said today that it is reviewing its tax affairs following the public outcry in the UK.

As a fiscal conservative, if this were to happen in the states - it would be my worst nightmare. I am also certain with Obama in office, this is the path we are on.

And the worst part is, they have bred a culture that hates capitalism and anyone successful. This culture has been planted here in the US and is definitely turning into a major force. Either it be the 'occupy' crowd or to all of the poor people that Obama promises more government support.

Used to live in Crystal Lake.....when Obama won the senate seat. Interesting how the Chicago Tribune got the CA courts to unseal Jack Ryan's divorce documents AFTER he won the republican primary. Absolutely fascinating the orchestrating of Obama's rise.
Greece too has a population dependent on the teat of govt largesse. They don't know how to work hard anymore and there aren't many entrepreneurs left.
If I were to bet, the Euro either won't be around in 15 years or it'll look a lot different. Germany is the only one of the large Eurozone nations that is fiscally disciplined and not ruled by the leftists.

Some may think this inappropriate, and whilst it is never my intention to offend anyone I have no regrets about posting this. It is one of the few occasions when I don’t care what people think.
I do not wish to start a debate on why they don’t fund it themselves. Having spoken to my relatives who are close to this family I believe I know why they are not able to do so. Relying on a socialist originated NHS and donations in an attempt to save their child’s life, does not make them“dependent on the teat of govt largesse”. Not everyone is lucky enough to get wealthy by working hard, or to be in the financial position many of us are.
I also do not want to make political capital out of this, and it may sound pompous, sanctimonious, sentimental and naive. So what I can live with that, but at a time when many on here appear to be moaning about the possibility of paying more tax to fund healthcare, I personally find it difficult that governments and citizens of all political persuasions cannot in many individual cases find a few thousand pounds to possibly save a life, but have no problem finding the money to fund obscene futile wars or fund a “toy” car.
“We” can afford it but choose to spend our money on other things, which is not a criticism, each to their own.
So if you can spare a few quid towards this cause great, if not that is not a problem.

Nick, good news on the tax front - at last. Make the bastards pay their way I say!
On the other point (well made by the way) I believe it is absolutely hopeless trying to compare other nation's political systems with ours - there is only a limited overlap in concept.
The UK has always 'enjoyed' a sense of community amongst the common man of which I am pleased to be one, and mutual assistance is part of our deep rooted sense of being. Borne out of thousands of years of oppression and bloody slaughter, in the main, we in the UK are a caring and sharing bunch despite the political hue of the establishment of the day.
Just a quick example - several people I have never met in person, only through this forum, have been prepared to travel hundreds of miles to help me when I have medical problems. David Morton was the very first to offer his kind assistance and I am pleased to say we have met many times and enjoy each other's company as a result.
I am not at all sure I could expect that consideration in any other country in the world, although I would hope that I could.
I would add that David and I (and others here) never discuss politics. Friends are far to valuable to lose in that useless manner.
