Top Gear USA

Sorry Malcolm, I didn't mean to cast you in an unfavourable light. There is always an exception.....

David,

Any chance of two exceptions?

Although I will admit it is more about entertainment and the presenters now. While it remains the top programme for international sales the accountants are not going to change the format.

sold internationally in 2009/10

1. Top Gear
2. Life
3. Planet Earth
4. Being Erica
5. Doctor Who

I'm still a fan too, and I think the ratings are still high, the latest series that will start soon sees a new Stig after Ben Collins "outed" himself. If you watch TG with the expectation of seeing three fully grown 10 year olds dicking about in cars then it is still very entertaining. As for the American version "How hard can it be?"

Now that you are talking car related programs.... how about a reality show with the "Grassroots built GTM. Where ordinary car guys get together and build an endurance car out of stuff found in an ordinary garage and hardware store. Each week you follow them to an endurance race somewhere in the US and hosted(driver) by a celebrity(with driving talent) and an amateur driver and then the finally is the 25 hour race. Here you see backyard technology out racing BIG horse power! No Drama ( Orange County Choppers) No Saturday night circle track mentality ( all players have teeth), No exotic parts that no one can really afford, but "Wife's Tupperware" as an air intake plenum, or cheese container fuel catch cans! All about fun and great racing!
And at the end of each segment, viewers could say, " I could do that".

What do you guys think? any suggestions on who to contact?

I agree 100%, that is why I used to watch the Power Block, Muscle Car in particular because what they were doing made you feel like you could do it too. And Lou Santiago made it entertaining, a REAL personality.

...As for the American version "How hard can it be?"

Impossible. But I think the problem is the audience, not the producers. As a life-long fan of British humor I am convinced that the average American, and especially the average American car guy, simply does not get that kind of humor. I didn't see one single instance of intelligent humor on the US show that came close to matching what goes on within the UK program's repartee.

I have been checking off and on for awhile. Tim Allen was tied up (contractual), Dempsey is on a Mazda contract and both unable to participate but their managers did say it was worth pursuing. Next choice is an FFR owner, Jack Lawerance. We'll see... I have contacted him but have not heard back. This would make a very good and entertaining series.
It is hard to think of any celebs that half a wit to drive FLAT OUT!

Based on that small excerpt, I'd watch it even if the formulae are identical to the original. Just makes a change and can I learn something from it...

UK version played out but still funny sometimes..
