vroooooooooooooooooom or mosquito on steriods???

I'm planning soon to get a GT-40 (actually right down to the the plan stage of what im getting and what not) but love rotary engines. Would you guys hate me if a put a 26B 4-Rotor engine? It's actually still a LeMans car (Mazda 767B 1992 winner)

I wouldn't hate you - it's your car - make it what you want it to be....

I must say that the 2-3-4 rotor engines emit a scream that is somewhat reminscent of some of the F1 engines I've heard.. When racing along side them I 've actually had to back-peddle so they could pull away just to allow my eyes to focus again from the high pitched harmonics / sonics involved. They are very hard to muffle adequately without killing off gobs of power.

Hey Mazda is majority Ford owned anyway isn't it? ;)

PS The 767b is one of my favourite LeMans racers. It dared to be different and succeeded.

Well, you're not the first to think of it Nathan. My previous competion car was a RX-7 turbo and so naturally you tend to think rotor motor is the go for your next car. I really think a 20B turbo would go very nicely in any sort of mid engine type car. Easy to get adaptors to suit porsche/vw transaxle and plenty of room to install one. Would go well hard (400 - 500 RWHP is dead easy), 20B's sound very nice ( I think) and would weigh less with a lower centre of gravity than a V8. Cost would be similar to a decent Ford V8. $10 - 15k should get you a rebuilt and ported 20B with decent turbo.

But....it would just be wrong with a GT40 body and hence your resale value would be relatively poor. Fran might be onto something though!

Yeah i'm going with the 302 :D hmm i'm planning on dropping a 13B-REW in a 1990 Toyota Celica GT-Four, should be rad. I think thats gonna happen first because i already own the celica. I'm selling the series 5. I have no money. It all goes into cars & my house.

I suppose you want to know my situation, before telling me anything?

I'm from sydney australia im 25 and a fairly successful real estate agent. I love cars and used to want to be a mechanic, i own my own house and have less then 5 years of mortage left. So basically all i spend money on is my low mortage and my car. I'm free to anything. I'm also very lucky as i only work 9-5 and have Saturday and Sunday off so have all the time in the world. I can just about fix anything, weld anything or craft anything so yeah that is basically my life story just so you know what kind of suggestions are open, i thought as im new i would turn this into like my introductory thread and just to say hi. Well anyway i'll come back later.

I have done pretty much a complete work up on both 13B's and SBC's at 450HP. You really don't need more than the twin rotor at this power setting. At 450HP they are right at the limit for 91 octane pumpgas. Its gonna take about 15-17 pounds of boost, maybe a little more and in reality more than likely a blend of race gas and pumpgas. So the 13B's end up costing more than twice as much for the same power. The real cost is in the electronics and turbo/intercooler system. The other problem is a lack of GOOD used parts. The more I looked at them the more I could see I would need to pretty much build a new motor from new parts, many of them race parts, port it, run fuel injection and put quite a bit of boost on it. All this will require a stand alone engine management system and a lot of one off pieces. The cost really goes up quickly as you start building it on paper.

But I too have lusted after that sound, another problem in itself. These engines don't like much backpressure downstream from the turbo at that kind of power. And it would be very hard to get it down to the restricted sound levels required at some tracks. This and the cost is what has led me towards a Chevy as I plan my dream. "Fingers crossed"

But Fran is right, it would be cool in a Super Light track car. Maybe a lot better than cool!

So how are you going to get a 4 rotor 26b engine?
But anyway, I thought I would share some of my knowledge of rotaries since I was messing around with them for some time.
Though, I can hardly be considered an authority on them.

First, they are really not to light of an engine. Although they are small, they are very dense. I put an s2000 (f20c) engine my rx-7 and it was only about 30lbs heavier then the N/A 13b it replaced.

Reliability is always an issue with any rotaries making serious power. A lot of kids blow their engines by running too lean, but even people who know what there doing don’t seem to get great reliability. I guess, for a race car that’s not going to see a lot of miles they are probably ok. I think the magic number was around 30,000 miles for the people that were outputting about 400hp out of 13bt. I don’t know what the 13b-re and rew were getting.

I never thought I would see one blow in person, but I was wrong. I was at an autoX and a new rx-8 blew its motor at the event. The car seemed totally stock. I don’t understand how some can be so reliable and others just... junk!

Of course, fuel econ is going to be an issue as well. You know why rotaries have such crappy fuel econ? Well, it’s because the 'chambers' are really inefficient. And because the exhaust port on the peripheral housing, all that unburnt fuel left over after combustion exits out the exhaust port. It makes for a good light show out the exhaust... Also, this exhaust port is why rotaries are so loud too. It’s because the exhaust port opens so fast that it actually creates a sonic boom! On the RX-8’s, they moved this port to the side which helped with both of these issues, but nothing flows as well as the peripheral port.

The 26b has both a peripheral port intake and exhaust… And because the ports are so huge and the timing overlap enormous as well, the engine just doesn’t idle worth anything. But wow! they sure do sound great and make some pretty great power; But it sure comes at a cost...

BTW, the only reason 787b (a car I really love!) won Le Mans is because they allowed it to carry more fuel then the other cars. It was also losing, but the competition withdrew with mechanical problems.

I get my 787b fix on the playstation, Ya gotta luv Gran Tourismo.
I want to put a 13B turbo into a Lotus 7 replica. I'm thinking 400 horse
in a 500kg car should give that kick in the back fix.
