Darrin:
The top of my rear uprights clear the wheel by approx 7/16", and the lower suspension is fairly close also...even if you run a larger wheel there is a limit to how far in you can go as the next problem would be upper and lower radius rods which run near the outer limits of the suspension..
Most of the newer suspensions with the larger diameter wheels have large backspacing because they have been designed for that, and on a lot of front wheel drivers it was done to minimize scrub radius and take out the torque steer some of the early cars were prone to, and it also lengthens suspension moments which makes for a wider track and a lot of the newer suspensions are strut based which minimizes some components.
You may have to seek a compromise and go with wider body work, and a smaller wheels.
Good luck whichever way you go
