Which throwout bearing do I need?

What I have is the ZF with a 10.5 clutch and external slave cylinder. Should I get a self aligning throwout bearing? What are you using?

Fran (Race Car Replicas) plans to get back to me with an answer tomorrow. I will post the part number once I come up with one.


Since I am not actually building my car this time it really has made me realize how useful a forum can be.So when I find information I can share with others that may be useful I will try and post details about it. :thumbsup:

Allen, If your running a ZF with external Slave cyl that operates on the ZF cross shaft which in turn has '2' forks to move the TB/carrier then wont you need to address the exact type of carrier for the TB before looking for a TB to match the clutch cover you have chosen? I dont think any of the above will actually fit the ZF fork as they are all Ford/Chev production types.

Im only guessing, but I would imagine that the carrier will either have a couple of clips &/or maybe two flats machined on it that locate it between the release fork fingers to prevent it turning. Doesnt look like the original ford type clips will work with that forged release fork plus you will need to have whoever is fitting this up calculate the reqd TB/carrier stack height to work with your particular clutch installation if it has not been done already.
Dont forget the correct spigot brg & check for crank/input shaft clearance as well.

BTW, that pic is from a Pantera...eg upside down to that of your GT40.

As a Pantera/ZF dork, I've got a decent supply of service parts floating around in my guest bedroom (the guests sleep in between boxes of parts, naturally!)

Here's a photo of the throwout bearing, and the bearing carrier:

The bearing is a simple round bearing with no 'tricks'; it presses onto the bearing carrier. I think it's a standard Ford bearing, and dirt cheap--$25-30 at any auto parts store.

The bearing carriers were made in Italy and have a unique part number:

You won't find the carriers locally; they are over $200 from the Pantera parts dealers.

There is a clip used to secure the carrier to the clutch fork:

Here's an exploded view of the Dash-1 ZF setup in the Pantera:

Remember that the GT40 gearbox orientation is upside down from the Pantera setup.

Also note that the input shaft of the Dash-1 ZF is shorter than the Dash-2, and requires the use of a special adapter in between the pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft, and the snout of the input shaft. That is shown in this drawing also (parts #7-10).

All these parts are readily available from the various Pantera vendors, and the prices aren't too bad.

Two of my three hub carriers are for sale by the way, for less than the dealers are asking. NOS in the original Ford boxes. E-mail me at the address below (don't PM me) if you're interested....

OK - So the plot thickens :shout:

I have purchased the ZF from Race Car Replicas with my RCR 40 purchase and have not enough information from Fran as of yet it looks like to supply him with what has asked me to get for him. I don't know if it's a Dash-1 OR Dash-2 thanks Mike for the information and pictures. Fran had me supply a standard ford 10.5" Clutch kit so I assumed it could have been a early 60's Ford throwout bearing. I am glad I haven't went out and bought anything yet.

To answer Jac Mac - my clutch cover is one of the RCR units I believe? RCR is also the one's installing my drive-train as I am having a turn key build done.

I guess I will wait and see what RCR tells me to buy, before doing anything more.

This part number turned out to be a Hydraulic and was not what I wanted, so we are back to the drawing board. Since I know what transaxle I have this should be easier though.

Im guessing the ..16525.. is the one you need, you will need to reference the collar ID to ensure it matchs the sleeve dia on front of your trans, the brg dia for contact dia & profile on clutch fingers, and the release fork dimensions to match the flats on the collar. At least its adjustable in 0.200" increments for stack height.
