Here's my question: WHEN will NASCAR finally put its foot down on all these confrontational 'macho tough guy' displays on the track? It's time they got serious. E.g.: First offense = $50K fine & loss of 'x' points. 'Second = $150K fine, loss of ALL points won to date. 'Third offense = banned from NASCAR for life.
It's amazing someone hasn't been killed doing that sort of thing before now.

The investigating Sheriff says Stewart has nothing to answer for.
Doug, the crash was caused by Ward's left front wheel and Stewart's right rear wheel getting entangled near the rail. If Ward had backed off, no crash, I doubt that Stewart even saw him. A driver does not get out of his car and walk into traffic, Ward was young, he lost his temper and it cost him his life. Stewart was not at fault. Please check the facts before lynching someone.

It sounds to me like Stewart lost his temper...again...this is a pattern that TS has shown for some time now. It's one thing when you walk up to another driver and throw a punch...yet another when you see the guy who caused the wreck heading onto the track (perhaps to give TS the "one fingered salute") and you mash the throttle, throwing the rear end of your car out and hitting the guy, killing him in the process.
For those of you who may live outside the US or may not follow NASCAR, Tony Stewart's angry behaviors have been escalating for years. Perhaps this time he went far enough to get NASCAR's attention. TS has suffered penalties in the past, but nothing like the penalty he inflicted on that other driver. Crashes are part of racing...TS has been around long enough to know that, Al. His actions this time should land him in front of a criminal court judge, perhaps that is the way he will get a 20 year "suspension" :thumbsdown:

First of all this was NOT at a NASCAR race, this was a small-time sprint car race (midget cars with tons of power, sliding around on a dirt oval).
The victim in this accident was clearly acting like a hothead; he was apparently not at all pleased that his car went into the fence after tangling with Stewart's. He stood on the side of the track until Stewart's car came around again, then dashed down to confront him, apparently positioning himself in front of it to force him to swerve off-line. Stewart seemingly tried to do so and ALMOST missed him, but his back tire struck him.
I don't follow NASCAR and couldn't care less about Stewart's history or reputation. In this instance the victim was clearly acting like a jerk, and unfortunately he paid the price for it. Sad for his family, no doubt, but to me it's a clear example of Darwin in action....

Mike, your interpretation of the event is exactly what I saw, as far TS being a "hot head" , all of the drivers are type A personality, some just hold their temper better. The only person I saw that lost his temper was Ward. It's too bad it cost him his life.

Tony Stewart is no angel, but all of these guys are full of testosterone, even the women who race. I can't imagine that Stewart hit Ward on purpose. Even a hothead isn't going to murder someone, let alone a fellow driver. Ward should have stayed in his car. He didn't get out to get killed, but Stewart didn't intend to kill him, I'm certain.
