ZF Factory Support

Hi everyone,

for those who are interested, ZF is currently in the process of setting up a special division for technical support and parts supply for out-of-production gearboxes and other components, be it for street or racing purposes. They´re already starting to reissue technical manuals and parts lists and are giving technical support as well. The remanufacturing of parts and whole gearboxes will, as usual, be depending on market demand. However, the person to talk to is:

Are you sure this will include the transaxles? I thought all rights to the -0, -1 and -2 transaxles had been sold outright to Roy Butfoy (Lloyd's father) at RBT?

Calling Mike Drew...... he'll know more on whether that was the case I'm sure.

I spoke to ZF UK a couple of years ago and they told me everything had to be done through RBT

I no longer have the contact details as I changed jobs

I think one must see ZF´s recent activities in a bigger picture. DAIMLER, Porsche, BMW, BOSCH and many others are currently intensifying their activities in the market of old parts and are setting up special divisions, museums etc. So it´s only been a matter of time that ZF would also join this movement with ZF being one of the most important suppliers of drivetrains, suspension and steering components worldwide.

As for RBT, of course I don´t know about the arrangements they made with ZF but I couldn´t possibly conceive of any contract NOT allowing ZF to also look after customers of their DS gearboxes as well. And whatever they sold to RBT...believe me that ZF sure has kept the original blueprints for tooling and parts. Yet that doesn´t exclude the possibility of having sold copies to RBT, why not?

Last but not least, all the forum members complaining about not being able to get in touch with RBT prove ZF having done the right step.

It is a number of months ago now but he was helpful in getting original documents to register my car in NC.

I spoke to zf holland and they told me that they sold the rights to rbt and that they may not supply any parts for it.
But the spokesman i talked to coold be wrong offcourse

No, that's correct. Many years ago, the late Roy Butfoy (Lloyd's father, the "R" in RBT, which actually stands for "Roy Butfoy Transmissions) purchased all the original tooling, and worldewide manufacturing and distribution rights for the ZF transaxle from ZF. If you call ZF in Germany (or wherever) asking for anything, they will direct you to Lloyd.

As part of the arrangement, Butfoy is allowed to use ZF trademarks etc. When you think about it, ZF has dozens and dozens of factories all over the world that make various things. RBT is effectively similar to one of those, except that he has autonomy and an exclusive arrangement. ZF can't tell him what to do, but he can manufacture and sell their design, with their brand on it.
