GT40 45th reunion at Road America

Yes, great !
I guess it is worth mentioning that those three Ford GTs up on the support structures are serial nos 001, 002 and 003..

I'm really enjoying seeing the pictures. Please post more of them guys, especially if you don't think they look good I bet one of us will. Us folks that didn't get to come are living vicariously through others.

Thanks,
Ron

I don't quite know how to explain this, but I'll try without trying to sound boastful or arrogant. It just happened, that's all, and I'll try to explain it that way.

Great story Howard - I have tried to relay it to a few people but without doing it justice. It was nice meeting you!

Ps. I accidentally erased the video, all I am left with is abstract art of the windshield wiper and part of the dash, a hint of the number 2 on the front and legs of spectators. See for yourself, if you were there, you will know...
this is real. If someone got some pictures from the outside while I was in it can you send them to me.

I have done this before and was able to recapture it as long as you don't overwrite the memory. There is some inexpensive software that will recover deleted files - ask me how I know! Just use Google...

Just got back from RA, it was a great event with a lot of good people to meet including many on the forum. I took way too many pictures, some are decent, some are bad, but all were fun to take.

For those interested, please see attached link.

Road America Historic Races 2009 - Windows Live

I uploaded medium sizes but if anyone wants the high res pics just PM me.

Thanks

Kevin - I checked out the pics and they are great! Your pictures 113-129 are my wife and I going around the track during touring...can I please get your higher resolution shots? Pleae email to mchristian AT canetics DOT com. Thanks in advance!

Pictures are great but those that did some speed on the track should talk about that
Daryl was so pumped up he could hardly get out of his race gear
Some saw 170 on the main straight, for instance
I haven't driven that track in 40 years and I wonder how fast some turns were on modern tires
Did anybody record the sound of all those originals going up the hill after Turn 5?
Those that weren't there would like to know, I'm sure!!!

WOW!

What a great event!

Jack, without the tags I doubt I would have met so many people- thank you! Sorry I didn't get to meet you there.

Saturday and Sunday touring was a blast! I got to 120mph in a place or too in a rather tight pack. The car handles fantastic and ran perfectly. It was a big hit with Sara and now she is talking about Skip Barber or Bob Bondurant courses...too much fun.

On Sunday, after a brat and beer lunch, we were able to watch Sara's cousin's cars win their race - he handles a 1997 Benneton F1 and Formula Atlantic. It was a good outing for them. I was able to try that Benneton on for size and it is a snug fit - and I am an average size person. I can't imagine what it must be like to take one of those around the course. It just reached its 1600 mile mark so they have to send the engine back to Judd for rebuild.

I wasn't really that interested in going to the concourse (I have been to just a couple of them but they were rather stodgy), but my wife's cousin talked me into it. I was glad I went. I would say a few thousand people walked by us and we had many many interesting conversations with complete strangers (some of them quite loaded). Ran into a few old friends too.

There I also got to spend some time with some of the folks on this forum. That was a treat!

We were talking to the owner of the Pantera parked next to me and his wife when we heard our name being called. I went up to the stage and was handed a trophy and got my picture taken. I had no idea what was going on - the trophy says Group G on the box and RESERVE. It is a heavy piece of glass. The TSA at the airport took it out and scanned it alone - not sure what that was all about.

I took some really crappy pictures - two sample are attached:

Dennis Olthoff kicking GT40 butt and
Johan crossing the finish line.

I also have a bunch of good ones that I will post.

We were wrapping it up Sunday back at SPF area when Justin of SPF said that 1086 was out of the Ford display and sitting on the grass. I went over and sure enough there it was. People were all around the shiny new SPFs, but didn't seem interested in the old 1086, so I took the opportunity to take a bunch of detail pictures and HD video of it. SPF was helping to sort out a problem with the car.

It will take me a while to come down from this brat/beer, GT40 Road America high....WOW.

Mike

I have in-car video of both the qualifing and feature races but I am having a hard time compressing the file to upload it to youtube.

Dennis Olthoff kicking GT40 butt

Yes,

Dennis told me a few weeks ago his goal was to be the "fastest GT40 at RA" and he was! His SPF MK II with a Windsor 427 outran all original GT40s and Lee Holmans MK II FE "recreation". Without his first choice of tires and with street equipment Dennis showed his Corvair taillamps to a lot of cars. On Saturday he was only bested by a McLaren MK 2 (about 7-800 pounds lighter than a GT40) and on Sunday by the McLaren, a Chevron and a Lola T70 coupe, all much lighter. Dennis deserves a real "attaboy" and some support from the SPF dealers and owners for showing what a well driven, South African car can do!

I'm sorry I did not get to meet you at Road America Rick. I had a fun time racing with Dennis and look forward to racing with him in the future. He and the SPF MK II will be a welcome entry in the future as far as I can tell. I talked with Dennis after the race and he seemed to have really enjoyed himself even though I almost hit him in turn 8 of the first lap. I figured that if I did not get by him there I never would because his car is very fast on the straights.
You forget to mention that several of the cars were driven by professional drivers (not the owner) such as the Chevron and the Holman Moody car.
I think there were 5 or 6 Lola T70s and 5 or 6 GT40s in Group 5 and all within a second or two of each other. Made for an interesting first few turns....

Here we are cooking Buffalo steaks on the long drive to Road America.
Man they were tasty !

It rained a bit. We made our own treaded rain tires by cutting the tread into our slicks which were 18 months old. This only works if the tires are cleaned with a heat gun and scraper first (or brand new). We worked on this late into the night and then cooked Connecha Sausage, onions, ham, cheese omlets for breakfast. We cooked more steaks. We ate like kings all week and weekend. Food just tastes better in Wisconsin !

We installed Canards, new tires and a fire system on the 40 but blew the clutch
during Thursday practice and never found a replacement.

We had a pull around beer wagon made from an engine dolly and a wine barrel and it was supposed to tow behind the jeep but the jeep ran like crap the whole weekend. It only ran well when going away from the paddock meaning it would take you far away but not bring you back. Might have something to do with the fact that our paddock was at the highest point on the property.

The Lola was still running so drove downtown for the Friday night deal in the rain and ended up sitting with Bob
Bondurant in "Lolas on the Lake" having a couple drinks while it drizzled in between being sunny or dark.
Really an interesting and nice fellow.
