GT40 45th reunion at Road America

I talked to Bondurant on the hill facing turn 6-9. He was such a nice guy. Johan what did you end up placing during the race? I was not able to catch it.. i had to work.

The Windy City Cobra club guys had a nice setup and were generous as always with the food and beverages. They have some really nice cars.

I was surprised and disappointed that there was no "reunion pin" for sale. I had my 1989 Glen reunion pin in my lapel all weekend and had several people mention it. I walked up to the "Four Mile Merchant" (which seemed like 5 miles from our spot...could it be possible?) but no pins were for sale.

Note the picture of P1086 (Gulf colors, ex Peter DiSilva car) with Randall fixing the throttle cable. I am supervising (well someone has to do it) by staring real hard at the problem, sometimes you just gotta out-stare them to win. Gee, "replica" guys fixing the real thing!

Everytime I walked past Johans paddock spot there was no cooking going on, I would have LOVED a buffalo steak. But the Brats were pretty good consolation!

And another THANKS to Jack for the I.D. badges.......(badges, we doan gotta show you no steenkin' badges!)

Well, didn't do too bad considering I had little practice. Some buddies drove in to see the practice sessions and Ron parked his car right in front of my trailer door then goes to take a nap under a tree for several hours keeping us from getting the car out of the trailer.
Then Pete hugs me for getting him the great parking passes and breaks my sunglasses so I have to wear some free ones from 1988 McDonalds.
24th in practice, Qualified third and finished the feature race behind a McLaren, Chevron, Lola T70 and right in front of Dennis so he probably wants a re-match after the way I dive bombed him in turn 8.

There were event dash plaques for sale at the Road America stores. I have attached a photo of the plaque. They should still be available for a while.

The '170' you probably heard from me... This was the first time I've had my car on the track anywhere. I let Mike Trusty use my Avons on 15" wheels, so I was using my 17" Michelins on the track. They are pretty good, but I was really feeling out the car and the track. Road America is a tough course to learn you car on!

On Sunday, during the 1 PM session, I figured I needed to see what it'd do, so when I came onto the front straight in 3rd, I kept my foot in it and wen though 4th up the hill. I could actually feel the tires losing grip on the bumps as you go up the hill. Into 5th and went under the bridge where everyone is standing watching you go by. I eventually took a quick glance over at my speedometer and it was heading north of 170. I chickened out at this point and backed off for the corner.

That's as fast as I've ever been in a car and it had more in it. Still accelerating hard. Woohoo!

I was starting to get into the track and the car a lot better and then the last session was over...

I had a great time and it was good meeting a lot of you that I'd only 'met' on the forum.

FWIW,
Kirby

Pictures are great but those that did some speed on the track should talk about that
Daryl was so pumped up he could hardly get out of his race gear
Some saw 170 on the main straight, for instance
I haven't driven that track in 40 years and I wonder how fast some turns were on modern tires
Did anybody record the sound of all those originals going up the hill after Turn 5?
Those that weren't there would like to know, I'm sure!!!

I really wished that Jim was there. Along with Steve Volk who owns another J car but a Holman Moody. I got to talk to Lee for a bit. For me that really made my weekend, talking to someone who was there, who did everything. Amazing. Great vid by the way! I didnt walk away with any nice posters as i hoped but instead i got a book that i needed for my GT40 collection, a magazine and best of all, one of those cardboard signs that read "GT40 Display" with the big Ford sign above it. hahaha.

Finally sorting out my pictrure posting issues. Here are two real crappy ones -

Dennis Olthoff so fast I can't keep up

and

Johan is just a blur

I told you they were bad...better pictures to follow
