Gates arrest.

In regards to "local courts will sort it out", this is a joke (IMHO as well). Rarely will anyone win using this format against "City Hall), and in those rare cases that someone does win, guess what, you and I still pay for that poor performance or judgement of the police.

Sorry you feel that way Terry but I respect your opinion and will listen to what you have to say. On the court issue,I have to disagree. It is the very foundation of our system that our rights are defended by judicial action and that starts at the local level. As for not taking on 'City Hall',where would we be if everyone thought that? It works both ways - did Rodney King just roll over(no pun)? And more recently, 20 New Haven firefighters (white and latino) who were deprived of their right to promotions which were based on standardized tests, started their fight in a local court. New Haven FEARED A SUIT by the blacks and subsequent rioting( sorry this isn't pretty but this was the reason presented by city officials) and rejected their claim. They then went to district court where,VERY ironically, Judge Sotomayor- the new nominee for the latest Supreme Court opening - ruled against them, saying racial balance in hiring over rode individual rights and job qualification( test scores which the city threw out because not one person of a minority passed it). The Supreme Court got the case and overturned Sotomayor's decision. So you can, and should bother to,fight City Hall. Otherwise you will be steamrollered. Down the road, every right you lose will be guess who's fault. And Sotomayor will be sitting on the Court hearing YOUR appeal! A.J.

That's a scary proposition! She not too racialy biased is she!!! Wouldn't want to have my life on the line with her as judge! AJ what the heck are you doing up this late?

In my other 'life', I work for a blues/rock band. Tonight I did everything from playing acoustic rythym guitar, fix broken strings, to sound. It was a smaller club so we used my acoustic gig 200w PA due to size limitations(still quite loud) for the band. This past weekend I did a concert in the park series and I play acoustic solo and duet gigs around southern New England. Tonight was actually an early one as we started at 8pm and got out around 11:30. Sometimes I get home from another state at 3:30 or 4. No forum discussions on those nights, just walk the Jack Russells and hit the sack. I like to see what others have to say on various topics affecting our lives as well as the technical stuff. Sometimes I learn quite a bit, even from people whose ideas with which I disagree. I will never fault someone for expressing their opinion.

The President is suppose to be color blind, its apparent this one is not. All you hear is black this, black that, Latino this and that, I thought for sure when he took oath that he would represent that CHANGE has been made and put all this race crap behind us. I had no idea he was going to jump on the "poor black man" bandwagon. What respect do white people get? We are guilty the day we are born. We have a country of freedom, and suppose to have freedom of speech but most of us are frighten to say anything because we will be deemed RACIST, but other races can say what ever they want about whites and its OK, but don't let a white person complain, oh no!

I have to agree with Terry, that is the problem with this country, everyone feels that is should be "someone else" to speak out against what they deem to be an inappropriate response. Yes there are some Great Officers out there but there are those that abuse their authority even if it isnt all of the time, and that abuse isnt always motivated by race! But it is abuse none the less.

It has to be brought to the front, discussed and dealt with or it never gets resolved....

To think there are still some who believe that because we have a Bi-Racial president that all is good in America...

Guess what kind of uproar there would be if there was such a thing as an official "White Caucus"?

For what it's worth, I believe we witnessed the biggest example of racism EVER in the last presidential election. People were voting for Obama based on nothing else but the fact that he is black. THAT is racism in it's truest form.

Your right, I'm sure that no one noticed that is is very smart, well educated, self made, a great speaker and unlike our last president can think for himself.

The more I think about your comment the more I feel sorry for you, that is the stupidest thing I have heard in a long time. I would expect better from a fellow Californian, you are making us all look bad. :veryangry:

It's funny Mr. Craik, but your reaction is almost exactly like an individuals reaction who is profitting from gambling in CA when I bring up the fact that the allowance of gambling in this state being limited to only the state and those with Indian blood lines/heritage is a fully racist policy as well.

Obviously I have pushed one of your buttons. You don't happen to classify yourself as anything but "white" when it comes to census time, do you?

For the record, I never said that everyone that voted for Obama did so solely based on the color of his skin. I said that people did. It may have been hundreds, it may have been millions, I don't know, but based on the comments of individuals on the nightly news casts, it happened.

And don't feel sorry for me, I certainly don't for you.

"Stupid is as Stupid does" :)

Well it appears the Obama plan is working. While time, brain cells, and good electricity is being wasted on this never ending debate....Rome burns.

Focus back on the Euro socialism of America and the further loss of your rights that our forefathers paid for with many of their lives. Remember we killed over 600,000 of our brothers and cousins fighting this 145 years ago. More than WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam combined. It is over.

Back to the real problems. Who would have thought we would QUADRUPLE our national debt in 5 months to create jobs and bail out banks. Turn you attention towards Congress now. Under the cover of darkness these Thieves will steal our grand-children's futures while we twiddle....

I think you are referring to another thread. While I agree that we should focus on the subject at hand, I read that as to debate whether the Gates arrest was racially motivated or not, and whether the POTUS should be involved. Then Mr. Houpe brought up the issue of "reverse" discrimination, and here we are. Again I agree that the biggest issue to our country is the unabashed taking of yours, mine, and even Mr. Craik's rights, but that subject is best discussed on another thread.

Now, let's here some more from Mr. Craik so he can prove my points further. The more he talks, the better my position looks. :)

Although there are many ways to look at this issue, I must agree with Terry and Adrian.
And you are agreeing that the President of the United States should voice his opinion about an arrest that took place in Cambridge, MA. The arrest of a Black/White man such as himself. This man is also a close friend. I would think that the president would want to stay as far away from this as possible to keep the event from being more explosive. I wonder how many Hispanic, German, Irish, Italian, French, Arabic, Black, and White males were arrested for the same thing, under the same curcumstances that day that we will never hear about. We should not have heard about the Gates arrest. I am frankly quite sick of the race card! I've heard the Cracker, Honkie crap lots of times, I don't scream desrimination or racism, it's the same thing. I imagine cops feel like they are walking on egg shells every time they answer a call where color or race is involved. When is this going to stop? We have created a monster!

Didn't Obama win soemthing like 96% of the black vote? I don't know the exact figures but I do know it was Saddam Hussein-esque ridiculously high. I think Crash33's point is valid. Obviously not everyone voted for Obama because he was black but when you look at the % of black people who did it is pretty obvious they did so based to some degree on his race (Jim Craik also has some valid points too though - almost certianly a lot of people voted for Obama because he is articulate - well his autocue is anyway, he is well educated etc, but certainly his race played a big part in making people more receptive to his message. It is silly to say people voted for him JUST because he is black).

It was certainly smart politics by Obama. I think his comments in the Gates case do show a degree of bias that he promised would be absent under his presidency. Judging by the approval ratings it seems a lot of people are beginning to tire of the great speeches though. It will be interesting to see how he continues to go duirng the next few years. Then again, what do I know I live in Australia

Now things get interesting, and possibly messy.

The woman who called 911 now claims she never said the suspects
were black, nor does she back the officer's claim that she talked to
him at the scene.

So, Sgt. Crowley's statement and report can be held suspect
since direct claims are being refuted. Still waiting to hear both Sgt.
Crowley's call into the station as well as the original 911 call.

Let the games begin ...

Are you suggesting that there weren't those amongst us that didn't vote republican because they didn't want a Black man to become President of the United states????

Until you have had to walk that mile you cannot know what it it like to be profiled.

Look at it this way the officer in question has been trained to get to the truth, correct???
If so when Gates provided his school ID, apparently felt it wasnt enough he should have asked for another for of ID DL or the passport, since he just came back from China. Then he should have left the man's home, his presence was not needed to keep the peace, nor did the homeowner request it. This reeks of an abuse of power and it should be addressed at whatever level it takes to resolve the problem.

The FOS officer was an expert on racial profiling and how to avoid issues with it. He was a seasoned veteran officer. Are you saying that THIS guy went out to this call with an attitude that would constitute an abuse of power? I mean none of us were there, and I suppose ANYTHING is possible, but his history suggests otherwise.

And by the way, in my younger days, and even since I have had a family, I have been to secondary numerous times. Never ultimately had an issue as I speak respectfully and answer questions directly, but I gaurantee you that I indeed have been profiled. IMO it is a valid technique, and if you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to fear from profiling.
