London Riots

Sticking my head up over the parapet, how do you possibly stop this stuff? I mean, not so long ago it was unthinkable to see so much as a Ladie's Ankle!

Surely a society grows through the breaking-down of barriers. Until you go too far, how far is enough? It seems to me though, that we have now gone too far without anyone in governmental power having enough conviction to stand up and do what is needed. Too much vote-chasing and attempting to maintain the status quo. Why did Government arrange a Cobra meeting for 9am the following day? Why didn't they get their fat backsides around the table that very night? My guess is that they hoped thetrouble would have blown itself out overnight. Then all they need do is placate us with promises of how, "they would deal with it differently next time". "Lessons have been learnt", blah blah blah.

How can a small child or a young adult playing GTA, distinguish between the game world and the real world, when as soon as they look away from the screen, their imature parents are acting out the game in real life?

How often do we hear under-privileged kids saying, "I did Im cuz e disrespected me"? What's that all about? It seems that gone are the days where we live by the principle of sticks and stones........

The legal system has become swamped. We can't house criminals so we let them out early or release them on suspended sentences etc. Prisons have become more comfortable than many of the 'homes' these people grew up in. What is there to fear? It seems that many simply do not believe they will ever acheive any kind of success. Yet the truth is that many internationally successful people came from under-privileged backgrounds.

I do not believe that censorship is ever the answer though. That is too easy an answer. Censorship deprives the majority of being able to decide what they wish to see or do. Most people can and always will be able to distinguish right from wrong. What society should do in my opinion, is stop with the Liberal PC crap. Stop treating morons as if they are our personal responsibility. It is not my fault that some kid is a twat. It is not always the parents fault either. Some people are quite frankly, just bad. Others become bad through lack of guidance. Either way they are bad and should be dealt with. Many criminals are very highly educated.

It is time for society to stop being so bloody soft. These rioters fear the vigilanty neighbourhood groups more than they fear the Police. Why? Because they know a group of angry home/shop owners are not going to have their response governed by a Police command structure that is restricted by politically motivated command officers. The vigilanty will simply cut your balls off if he catches you.

Rubber bullets? Tear Gas? Hell Yes! Drop the gas from helicopters and see the little wan*ers out-run the wind!!!

It must be more like this...
when you do a criminal act (such as in the riots etc) you loose some of your human rights (depends on what you did/do) and face the consequence....criminals have the same right as "normal" good behavior people, thats not right...when you behave you have nothing to fear, when you hurt people or are a criminal you must have a lot les rights!

Looking back in into history, you can't pack them up and send them to Australia or Georgia.....or can you? I think the Australians take the gloves off during an arrest, equal force and all that.
Tell me is it true you have the right to receive unemployment pay for life in the UK?

Grady, are you deliberately trying to ruin my day? ;) LOL

I think the whole western world should club together and buy Greenland. Fence it off and fill the seas with electric sharks and drop the whole bloody lot of them off and let them get on with it.

How about public flogging Mark. More serious crimes should be firing squad, etc. with the public (via Telly) allowed to watch. No tolerence policies make the PC crap obsolete.

My assumption is the protection of those that were swept up in the melee, who may be innocent of any crime. It cannot be assumed that just because you are pulled into a courtroom, you’ve automatically lost your rights.

It is all so sad. There seems to be a uniform of sorts with Adidas logos and hoods. At least over here that's the trapping of gang kinds of things.
Having your (US) tax dollars sending me to waaaay to much graduate school, there are some interesting bits of research that suggest that youngsters (especially males) need structure and belonging. When they are disenfranchised by institutions, (pick one or more) dysfunctional families, educational or work units, they have a desperate need to belong and gangs fill the void. For some of us, it was the military. With gangs, you get the gang behavior we seem to be seeing. In grad school I wrote a paper on motorcycle gangs who are some very interesting organizations.
On TV, I just had the pleasure of listening to some women named Harriet Harman (I think an MP) who said the problem is the tuition cutbacks and poverty. But they weren't stealing bread they were apparently stealing high end consumer goods. These are not hungry mobs storming the Bastille. Seeing the pictures of the poor kid stripping off his clothes to enable some thug to choose which of his garments he wanted was horrible. That is someone that will wear that emotional humiliation scar a long time. This is more like “Lord of the Flies” than any other movie I can think of.
The decision will come down to the consequences for their actions. If they are sent to some sort of sensitivity training and given a lecture or two you may well see this again.
By the way, after hearing about Harriet Harman I did some research and THAT is a real piece of work. She makes Van Jones look like Ronald Reagan.

Well stated Veek! I believe the "structure and belonging" bit to be very accurate, as well as the dysfunctional families really hits the nail on the head.
Those more intelligent persons within the gangs, etc. will readily admit that the gangs and/or friends of similar nature replace the families and fulfill the "belonging" and "structure" elements they seek.

Veek +1 mate.

HH is a piece of work you are correct. Now you know why we're in this predicament - too many years of PC and no blame = no responsibility. If someone broke the law it was because they were deprived. That's Bliars mob for you. The damage done is incalcuable.

This kind of politicing is shameful and I don't think the British public at large is falling for it one bit. 99% of all comments (and there have been many) in the newspapers and internet have put the blame down to 'mindless thuggery'. I was thinking today actually, that the only "food" outlet raided tended to be McDonalds, and they can go ahead and wreck as many of them as they like.

Good observation Veek. One guy was seen trying on various different trainers in a wrecked store - trying to find a pair that fitted.

Cameron has come in for a bit of stick since he has been PM but I'll tell you this; at this moment, UK householders can now defend their properties using reasonable force, in fact one guy stabbed a burglar to death recently and was released without charge. Cameron has said this is right & proper, whereas two years ago, a householder was jailed for punching a burglar and about 10 years ago, a man who shot and killed a 16 year old burglar (with a licensed shotgun) from a family that was constantly constantly terrorising and vandalising his property was jailed for life, even though it was dark and he couldn't have possibly known who it was, only that they shouldn't have been in his house at 2am.

I am glad to say he has been released well ahead of his tariff, and this demonstrates that people ARE waking up to the fact that we've generally had enough of 'NANNY'. It clearly doesn't work.

The irony of course is, that these guys, for a few minutes of random destruction and looting, have kind of shot themselves in the foot for the future. But there again, if they had have thought it through they would have realised the consequences.

Democracy is a system that relies on the consent of the people. Ultimate democracy implies that all citizens take part in the political process and as a result we can enjoy the fruits of our labours in peace and harmony. This is what happens when a stupid minority opt out and thus, we lose a little more freedom and move slightly further away from democracy.

It is interesting that an 11 year old boy in court today said "he was protesting against the cuts" by smashing down the door of a shop, presumably to get inside and "redistribute goods to the needy" . Don't make me laugh.

No-one in the UK needs to go hungry. We have such a benign social care program that thousands of stateless foreigners are enjoying our hospitality to the full. These "cuts" that are often referred to are in fact cutting the billions of pounds wasted on quangos, committees, civil service departments, sinecures, useless middle management and generally overspending on just about everything. The fact that the UK has retained (just) it's AAA credit rating is because the Govt is implementing a tough waste cutting regime. It isn't the most popular way to get re-elected but someone has to do it.

If the citizens of the UK (who are in part to blame for all their irresponsible and sometimes fraudulent borrowing) think that we could continue to survive the way we were, then they're more stupid than I thought and these "riot" morons have probably done more damage to the general economic "health" of the UK than their tiny minds could ever contemplate..

Finally, the British people pull together in a crisis and this is what is happening now.

Someone has miscalculated very very badly...

Well said Mr Hardy.
Unfortunately Australia is also in the grip of hand wringing P.C. and If we don't wake up there will be riots in the western suburbs of Sydney within five years.

If they need to belong to a gang and definitely in need of discipline and value then why not conscript any of the older guys convicted of any of these crimes in to the armed forces.

Well, the latest concept is to kick them out of their state owned homes if found guilty of looting.

All well and good, and great for headlines, but what happens then? The cycle starts all over again, and the lawless become even more lawless. Do they live in a cardboard box in town somewhere? Then they definitely can't get a job and the circle keeps turning until guess what? they loot again, this time for food (or booze).

It is such a difficult situation to deal with, and it's all our own fault for letting it get this far for being overly PC and nannying. I am afraid that the situation is irredeemable now and it is something that many many future generations will be left to solve / clean up.

Personally I prefer the sniper rifle from a reasonable distance option :shifty:

Put them in stocks and in the streets in which they rioted.

Then they can explain to the general public what they were doing and in turn the general public can show their appreciation by means of application of rotton fruit etc.

The worse the crime the longer in the stocks - or perhaps over a Saturday when more public are available to show their appreciation!

1) Face is seen and not hidden so we all know the perpetrators
2) They will not like it
3) It forms a deterrent for "next time"

Our forefathers knew how to "disgrace" someone

In a run-down part of East London a fire destroyed a dilapidated four-storey house that had been divided into four flats.

A Nigerian family of six Internet con artists and full time benefit cheats lived on the first floor... all six tragically perished in the fire.

A group of seven Islamic welfare cheats, all illegally in the country, lived on the second floor... they too, all perished in the fire.

Six Albanian, gang banger, ex-cons - all claiming political asylum and living off the state for free, occupied the 3rd floor...they too, died.

But the middle aged British white couple who lived on the top floor miraculously survived the fire.
The Equal Opportunities Commission, Amnesty International, Rights activists, black community leaders and the British Islamic Council were all furious at the apparent racial inequality of the situation.

Why was just the British white couple saved? It was monstrous they claimed, and showed that systemic 'racism' still existed in all areas of public service - questions were raised in the House of Commons, the popular media picked up the story and within hours it was national and indeed international news.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, when questioned stated calmly that it would be unwise to jump to conclusions until the Police and Fire Service had completed their report. He closed by stating that he expected their initial assessment to be available within the next 36 hours – so perhaps it would be best to let the experts gather the evidence and report back before he commented any further.
The baying Press pack subsequently reported the interview in such way as to intimate that the Mayor was indifferent to suffering and was out of touch with the feelings of the whole East London community!

A large motorcade of representatives from all five groups, together with the Home Secretary drove to the area, having demanded a meeting with the local chief fire officer. They made sure that a large pack of popular Press and TV had been briefed on the visit and so the motorcade was met by a huge gaggle of journalists, TV interviewers and cameras.

On camera, they loudly demanded to know why the Africans, Black Muslims and Albanians all died in the fire and only the white couple lived.

One bemused chief fire officer quietly replied ...

"Because they were both at work."
