Longest distance trip in your 40?

Get one of those motor cycle trailers Richard, I don't blame you, its starting to get cold here, the gloomy sky and cold winds make CA look pretty good right now.

Mike congratulations on your up coming nuptials!

Sorry Jack I will not be coming down to see you any time soon. I'm headed for So. Cal. to get out the the cold and spend some time with family. I hope the 40 is up for another trip south. I haven't even fix the area damaged by the deer yet. Weather could be a real crap shoot this time of year. I'm headed directly for the coast as rain would be much better than snow although I've done both.

To make the car a little more comfortable I finally finished a luggage box. Kind of crude and since I don't have a TIG welder it's done with pop-rivets but it will work for now. It will be a huge improvement over just the door pockets. Without a lot more tools I will never make much of a tin man. I also need to do something about the tie wraps holding on the license plate.

Sorry cell phone pictures are not the best.

I like it, including the rivets. Furthermore, it looks way better than any aluminum box I could make with my welding.

Thanks Alan. Like I said I will be heading south in the next few days, God willing and the creek don't rise to far. I need to come by and see how you are coming along on your car. Have you started it yet?

I had the box all but done when I thought to caulk all the seams which meant all the rivets had to come back out. I want to make the unit a left out so I'll be adding a handle and some type of clip pins to hold it in. Hardware ideas would be helpful.

It does mean I will be able to take a change of underwear along with a toothbrush this time. Oh sorry TMI!

Just another 1200 mile trip. I do love every moment of it. Maybe I'll stop for more than an hour or two along the way this time. I've done the trip in 19hrs. but I was much younger then like a few years ago.

Boy you are a brave one driving the 40 in a NW winter. Best of luck with the weather and keep us posted on your drive. Nice job on the storage box.

Richard you amaze me, great job! If you need a place to spend the night give me a call and I will guide you through.

I have to wait until Monday to leave as my new Hero2 HD camera will not arrive until then. It has a very cool time-lapse feature that I plan using on the trip. In Feb. they plan to release a remote that will allow you to stop and start the camera anywhere on the car and stream live video to a smart phone or lap top using WiFi. The remote will also control multiple cameras. Might make a very cool rear view mirror. Its also waterproof to like 100'.

The aluminum is 16 gauge except for the top which is 20. Getting the layout right took some thinking (tough when you get older) and I would do it a little different next time. It's pretty water tight except for the hing which I would move to the back side of the box. I figured out how to make it a drop in and will be adding a recessed handle at a later date. It will be awkward to get in and out due to the bodywork but will be much eraser to pack and use if I can take it out of the car. I might even make one for the other side but that's after I finish the rod shifter.

Jack not sure when or where I might stop but your place sounds like it might be just the place to rest. Please email me with the address.

The blue stuff in the picture is something my son had to fit ski boots. Its 1/8" thick firm foam padding that sticks like crazy. 3M 300LSE.

Richard, let me know how your HeroHD is working. I am pleased with mine, but the sound is an issue. Whenever I mount it on the exterior of the car I get nothing but wind noise. Good luck and be safe.

Dave I don't think bravery has any thing to do with it more like the lack of brains.

FedEx just delivered my camera which means it will be hard to pack for the trip with it sitting here.

Daryl I understand they have made several improvements with the release of new Hero2 like a glass lens and others. There is an audio in which would allow us to put a mic anywhere including one either out of the wind or one with a wind shield. Of course that means not being able to use the waterproof housing. I think I may buy a second housing and drill holes for the USB/Audio/Video cables as there isn't a way to mount the camera without the housing. Are you using the skeleton back door, it's supposed to reduce wind noise? I tested the older model about a month ago and was very impressed with the overall performance of the camera.

On most of the trip south I'll be using it in the time-laps mode so no audio but I'm sure I'll be doing some video so I'll let everyone know how it works. I'll try uploading some videos to my Google site and post the link.

The weatherman says no rain or snow this week which is good as I'm still a day or two away from leaving.

Richard, firstly your luggage box looks GREAT. That is just what a road-going 40 (ie. serious road-going, notjust driving to the race track) needs. Lift-out is ideal, too.
You may want to use a layer or two of that insulation all over the box, to avoid cooking the luggage inside.
Please let us know your thoughts and feedback on your trip, when done. Have fun.

Yeah, I want to hear stories from the road! Any snow? Any melted luggage? Any more deer? Tickets? Close encounters with hi-buck exotics or way over-boosted rice burners?

Right now I like nothing better than working on and driving the 40. I'd like to put 100k on tbe car but if I had the money I'd ship it across the pond and spend a season going to all the great events and races. Not that I've been to that many here they just seem to approach it differently.

I recently went to help a friend work on his GT40, drove my 40 about an hour in the rain the last five or so miles was on unpaved mountain roads. Enjoyed every mile. It is in the end a car that is ment to be driven.
I did put some insulation inside on the side closest to the muffler. Granted my average temp for the trip was just about freezing but in LA where it was around 70 the inside of the box seemed around room temp.

Richard sorry I missed your last email, I've been selling my 64 356 C and have not been keeping up with this thread. Sounds like you made it OK. They sure come out from under the rocks when you sell a car with the Porsche name on it. Enjoy yourself in the warmth.

Daryl I just took the car out for a test of the Hero2 both with the open back case. The first was mounted just forward of the right gas cap pointing back at the driver. Lots of wind noise the second the camera was mounted on the roof pointing forward. Much less wind noise but not as much engine noise as I would have liked. I'm going to pick up a second case so I can drill holes in the side for USB, mic, and video.

Maybe someone on the forum has experiences setting up professional video/audio systems in a race car can give up some ideas.

Being the middle of winter I headed for the coast as fast as I could. It was in mid teens when I left Coeur d'Alene. It hovered in the mid 20's until I got well into Calif. Around 10pm the first night I pulled into a rest stop near Medford Or. and got about two hours of sleep until someones car alarm went off. The car was well frozen up by then and for those who have tried using the defroster (sorry demister) you'll understand the a problem I faced.

Richard, why are you taking the interstate route? Why not the two lanes? Where are you staying at night? How are you securing the car? What kind of mileage are you getting? Pick up any hitchhikers?
