Stewart warner fuel pump

I think it is 1/4 or 3/8 NPT, but not sure. These are NPT fittings, though, I am almost certain of it. Take the pump to any race supplier, that have fittings and proper hose, they should be able to help you.

Are they working pumps? These can be a headache. Ask me how I know.

Thanks guys, I thought they were NPT but wasn't sure, I'm going to build a test rig to make sure there are no leaks, my wife thinks I'm mad as the Facet Red Top pumps on the car are working OK, but you know what it's like, can't stop fiddling.

I agree with you. I had Facet pumps and sold them. SWs are the real thing and very cool. They do cost like crazy, though. NOS ones are hard to find. Charlie Farley on this forum has some overhaul parts for the old pumps, but the switches, which are damn near impossible to fix, are NLA.

I'm not prepared to go into details here, but the switches are fixable, but only when i had ironed out all the wrinkles and not before....

you may want to re-think the sw fuel pumps although they look cool, Nothing but failures
I went thru 4 pumps before i switch over to the holley red pumps. Hard to find. Not rebuildable. I was thankful i was running two pumps never had 2 fail at the same time, but eventually they all failed. Replace the bad pump and two weeks later the second pump failed. I'm talking all 4 pumps in 2000 miles.
I ended up giving away a working pump and a box of 4 failures.
Symptoms of a failure is the motor is running no fuel pressure.

for clarity sake here is the pump i had so many issues with sw part # 82051

has anyone thought of gutting one of the original pumps just restore the outside and make it a pass thru. You would then have the required look, next put a reliable modern day pump under the covers. I think the reliability of a old pump with mechanical switches would require an up to date AAA tow card
I couldn't even get the modern day version of the sterwart Warner pump working reliably

Would not be difficult to do. Simply disassemble the pump and remove the piston. Fuel would flow through it easily.

However - if you pressurized the pump body, you would have pressure behind the Switch cap and that would most likely leak unless it too was plugged off (again - not difficult - just a step that needs to be done). Also, the Fuel filter cap on the bottom would need to be sealed off tightly as it also would leak).

If you were to use a fuel pump above or upstream of the SW240A pump, you would then be drawing a vacuum through the old pump body and it would be less likely to leak.

holley red pumps worked like a dream. The first summer with the car i was always in fear of a double failure with the stewart warner pumps. Once i bit the bullet and re-plumbed for the holley pumps i've had many years of trouble free driving

Different pumps, different issues. Pick your poison, I guess.

SW240As can be rebuilt, and considering their age, it's surprising how many are still on the road. If you need help, contact Andrew (Charley Farley).

I believe that another forum member in Australia or NZ has found a way to put modern innards in them.

Finally, Holley Reds have a mixed reputation. I used to run one in my cobra, and kept a spar on the shelf...I ended up needing it in about 3K miles.

Whatever you end up using, good luck.

that would be me, i did play around with a modern switch, however, it was not what I would call reliable, In the end I rebuilt the original switch -- carefully I might add.
Charley farley has parts and service is good

do a search on this forum and you will find the rebuild procedure

Thinking of running two SW 240A's for asthetics only. I'm going to keep the modern stuff in the left sponson for reliability. The two I'm eyeing show their age, not in a good way. Can anyone point me in the right direction of restoring the outer portion for appearance?

Rich.
