SLC Aftermarket Seat Option

Thanks Will.

With that offset, does that mean that only the standard RCR SL-C seat will fit on the passenger side, and not one of the wider RCR "gentlemens" models?

The only reason we're looking at non-RCR seats is that the cost of having them upholstered probably equals or exceeds the cost of aftermarket seats. Once the car is here, we'll go visit the Cypher and NRG folks at their respective HQs since they are near us, and try everything they have. I'd likely be fine at 5'7" in the aftermarket seats, but Colin is 6' and I haven't figured out a way to shorten him :)

Cheers,

Ruth

I'm not sure what the factory position is, but the red car I had was equipped with a wide seat in the drivers side (which was too wide for me, with a 35" waist), and a regular seat on the passenger side (which was about right- could have been a little tighter, and likely would have been perfect with upholstery). The outer "wing" on the pass seat was just touching the optional door panel. I'm sure the wing could be trimmed slightly, or the seat moved slightly more to the center. Of course, dispensing with the optional door panels would have opened up more room as well.

I'm pretty sure that using a wide seat in the pass side would cause more clearance issues.

As has been mentioned before, the problems with seat fitment are the width at the shoulders, and the height of the top of the seat bottom from the floor. I'm 6' and have tried many different aftermarket seats, and virtually none of them fit well, except the Tilletts. Others that look like they might fit are ones from Reverie, or possibly the Ultima seats, which are made to fit a car with similar sizing constraints. If you are tall at all, you don't have a lot of seat choices.

For those who are tall, reclining the seat will gain headroom, but there is a natural limit to that approach, including losing room for legs under the steering wheel if you have a one-piece seat.

When you are checking clearance, be sure to account for interior panels, and wear your helmet if you are considering ever tracking the car at all.

I have been looking real hard for seats that would fit me and I think I have found some from performance world it's there Pro seat and very reasonably priced at $229.00 each. They fit but the passenger side
is just a little tighter then I like so I am having them altered slightly. I will post some pic's when I get them back. Very much like Allan's.
Cheers,

Sorry people I mean't to post these pic's a while back these are the Pro seat's. I had to take them in and have the lower seat scooped out they are still small for me but they are as big as they can be and still fit in the Car. For the price I don't think you can beat them, they are quite nice and they look and feel like leather. I did how ever get bent over by the Upholster as he charged me more for the mods then the seats cost and I after seeing how they come apart I would have been an easy DIY. These will work for the average Joe, but due to my size, I have now confirmed if I want comfort I will need to build my own custom seats from scratch.
Cheers,
Grant

I wonder what ever happened to Fran coming out with the street seats for it or did that not pan out. I have the cipher ones, but a high end really nice seat would be really nice for our high end cars.

I also wonder why we do not have a really nice high end seats available from the likes of Recaro or Sparco. Has anyone ever contacted them about making some really nice seats for us, maybe even something they can put in their lineup for sale to the general public for even more sales. I would think there should be something that they can base it off of so there might not be a ton of changes needed. Fran, you can use your industry powers and make it happen? Here is how I would imagine the conversation to go.

Conversation version A
Fran: "Hello, I am Fran, the owner of RCR and would like to work with you on make custom seats for our SLC,"
Recaro. "We know the car and love it. We would love to work with you and give your customers an amazing seat at amazing prices. What can we do to make this happen, super pretty please with sugar on top?"
Fran. "We need these sizes----x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x- and make them like this x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x."
Recaro. "That we can do and send a free set of seats for to put into your own car you bring to shows so customers can see it themselves. This would be great for us. (much more ass kicking to just be involved with an SLC project goes on for minutes on minutes).
Fran. "Great, thank you, wonderful, I will look forward to them arriving on my doorstep by Monday of next week like you said you would do personally so you can look at the car yourself. I will see you then."

Conversation version B
Fran: "Hello, I am Fran, the owner of RCR and would like to work with you on make custom seats for our SLC,"
Recaro. "Who are you?"
Fran: "Fran from RCR."
Recaro. "From what or where?"
Fran. "I manufacture and design the best and most innovative replica cars and kit cars on the market. We set records at all the tracks we enter, we are the national champs and did I meantion I have raced isle of man."
Recaro. "Hmmmmm, well, we only want to deal with real cars, like the GTR's or EVO's. We are not interested in any truly interesting cars at this time or anytime in the future. Plus, I am eating my lunch right now so you are just lucky I ansered the phone at all.
Fran. "I am sorry to disturb you, but if you are insterested in making some seats and getting sales for your company we can work together on this."
Recaro. "Nah, we really do not care about real car guys and just sell what have. You can check our catalog for seats that might work as I need to go as my salad is getting cold from us talking, I mean warm, whatever. bye." click and hang up

Fran goes away from conversation mad and upset, starts new seat devolpment division of RCR called SGS-c (super great seats callipygous ). First thing he does is come up with ultra high end street seat for the SLC and SLC crowd roars with excitement and claim Fran is the best ever at everything, yet again. Fran devolps the best seats on the markets, sells millions to everyone and every manufacture, makes enough money to buy Recaro. He then sits sipping tea satisfied he has crushed the competition pondering what his next conquest shall be.

See, happy ending for all both ways.

Hmmmmmmmm...in some ways that sounds just a bit like the Ford/Ferrari saga of a few decades back, doesn't it. ;)

Oh Boy...

I will have the final mock up of the street seat shell on Friday actually....

It is a less enveloping seat with lower sides and less wrap on the shoulders.

It has integrated seat mount ing plate locations, seat belt pass through holes in the left and right hip area and also in the rear headrest area.

Its a street seat that looks sportier than the current track seats we manufacture...

This is only the seat shell and will be a no cost option to the SLC parts line up...

They will be available at a reduced cost to any current owner of an SLC but not a free trade/swap for the original seats....

Fran -

Will this will be a fixed back seat? I'm looking forward to seeing what you've come up with.

I'm trying to find a seat that will work for my wife. She's had issues with her back and the original stock seat just won't work.

I have had 4 back surgeries here and finally got it fused up now. Hence the want (really more of a need) to have a comfortable seat that I can sit in for than 15 minutes. This is why I sold my Lotus as those seats totally suck. I added the foam gel, changed the curve to my back that helped, but they still really just were not good at all. I do have the cipher seats and I am using them in my media room now and they are ok, but not really that great. That is why I was really hoping for a very comfortable high end seat from someone out there like Recaro or Sparco or something.

I am glad Fran is coming out with a more street seat, but if it is a just some different top portion of the solid seat then I just guess I do not get it. I think the stock seats seem good for a track day car as they hold in well. Maybe easer to get in and out, so that is good if that is the major change. If it is marketed as a street legal car then we should have a street seat that is not hard bucket we sit in, but maybe it is just me. Even one piece seats from Ferrari or whoever has lots of padding and set covers.

I think I just realized what my issue is after writing the above statement and I think it is my fault and expectation. I see the SLC as a top higher end sports car and compare it to the F430, McClaren and others in that range. In doing so I have come to expect that when I finish my car it will have a world class interior as such or at least something that I can feel comfortable taking on a long drive. I do not want to ever dread getting into the SLC like I did my Elise. I would make excuses not to drive it because it was not comfortable and feel great in that respect. Sure it handled great and was a fast, but that is not everything. I want to want to get into the SLC everyday (assuming no snow).

I am thinking something like this.

I agree, and I think many folks, including myself, would love a seat like that. Unfortunately, for that specific seat ayway, I don't think it would ever fit because it's way too wide. But from a style and comfort standpoint I hear you.

Troy,
You can have a Recaro. I have them in my car (see my build log) it does take some reshaping of the head rest area. If your back likes Recaros, get them. It's more work but then what isn't when you want your car to be YOUR car.

I might just have to do something like that as 4 back surgeries later I am where I am. We will see. I have the cipher ones so I will give that a shot first. I will see how Frans street seats come out.

The issue I have with a lot of racing seats are the narrow almost vertical side bolsters. I have wide hips and have to wedge into them. Thats why I like the Recaro style above because the side bolsters flare out on the bottom. I have 38/40 waist so having not seen an SLC in person I am concerned about the gentlemans seats from RCR. Still waiting to see what Fran comes up with for this new street option.

I searched and could not find which one it is. Can you link me. Thanks

BTW- Fran, it is past Friday now, pics please?

This is what I did to settle my seat options. I cut up the existing RCR seat and reshaped and added sections. Another owner did something very similar. The new version shown is an unfinished plug, which is the reason for the large flange around perimeter.
I have some additional pics of the work in progress.

That looks great Wayne. This might be posted somewhere but does anyone have the measurement of the bottom inside width of the gentleman's seat?

That looks very like our new seat...

you can see that this only has the mounting pocket mounted on one side of the mock up currently but it will actually be on both sides..

This seat will also be available in the standard and also the "gentlemans" seat option ...the back of the seat will also be fully enclosed with a class A finished surface on the rear of the seat...making it stronger and also more street style.

This seat is much less enveloping than the current seat

A Carbon option will also be available

No pricing yet..
