1998 GTD rebuilding project

Thanks to this forum I was able to come one step closer to my dream of owning „my“ GT40. After reading much of hhe content I eventually became a member and posted a search for a car with quite some specific criteria, due to being in Switzerland, to eventually be able to get it road-legal. I ended up buying a forum member‘s car, a 1998 correctly titled GTD in the UK. It has about 18k miles on its 302 carb engine under its red/gold body. It is a fairly untouched version from a technical point and there is a growing list of changes and tasks by the hour…

It started with the necessary change to EFI and a new muffler setup with cats as it will need to meet EUR2 emissions standards. Well, I might as well do it right and switch to a full IDA system and engine rebuild, while we are at it? After hours of consultations with both Frank Catt and Geoff Taylor in Southern England (who will be implementing the first part of the project) I decided to give this job to Peter Knight.

Side note - as much as I would have liked to do a full DIY project like Andy and his Linden green beauty, neither do I (currently) possess the necessary skills, nor the workshop at this point in time. With two still single digit age kids and a busy work life the major mechanical part of the project needs to be done by prfessionals. Once our house (and my garage and working space) will be rebuilt in a couple of years the final stage and future tinkering will be done in my basement. Until then I will occasionally drop in and annoy Geoff with requests to „help, learn and participate“ until I get kicked out again…

Anyway, these are some pictures of the current state of the car. The evolving to-do list will come asap. Given that I am a 1.5h flight plus 1h drive away from my car, I will not be able to adhere to the usual monthly update requirement, but will try to do my best whenever I do have updates.

Let the fun ( and bills…) begin…

General comment, I will post asap a list of either spare parts or used parts coming off the car (like the cable shift parts including mounting, shifter, etc.) when I know for sure.

If anyone has a matching proper tach lying around (we might need to change it based on the engine work) and also a matching speedo (including km/h) from the same brand with edgy (not rounded) outer ring?

The alignment in general is quite good, with the known seemingly usual exception of the not-so-great fitting of the a-pillar passenger door. I will address this when I have the car before the paint stage (hopefully already in my garage). Any feedback on this is welcome on how to best tackle this issue. I would spend hours trying to align as best as possible and then begin sanding and laminating (and repeating this) until it actually looks good. Any smarter idea is highly appreciated…

I will have at some point the current wheels for sale. I will stick with 15inch wheels but will switch to pin drive and also upgrade the suspension (how exactly is currently debated a bit, will keep you posted).

The pedalbox will be changed to an adjustable hanging one and we will get rid of the brake boosters, Geoff has his custom design giving the right amount of leverage to have great manual brakes. One question for all of you out there - aside from changing the steering column, what idea do you have to add a key-operated manual steering lock to my exisitng column? It is a hard requirement of the Swiss technical inspection. Any ideas are welcome.

Great purchase and you are in safe hands with Frank and Geoff…….I had my car looked over and tweaked by them a number of years back (Geoff was still Frank’s apprentice at the time) and the car, on its return was transformed and things just worked as they should. If you get to Geoff’s place ask him to show you his GT6 …… not much Triumph left in it!

Enjoy the build process.
