Thanks to this forum I was able to come one step closer to my dream of owning „my“ GT40. After reading much of hhe content I eventually became a member and posted a search for a car with quite some specific criteria, due to being in Switzerland, to eventually be able to get it road-legal. I ended up buying a forum member‘s car, a 1998 correctly titled GTD in the UK. It has about 18k miles on its 302 carb engine under its red/gold body. It is a fairly untouched version from a technical point and there is a growing list of changes and tasks by the hour…
It started with the necessary change to EFI and a new muffler setup with cats as it will need to meet EUR2 emissions standards. Well, I might as well do it right and switch to a full IDA system and engine rebuild, while we are at it? After hours of consultations with both Frank Catt and Geoff Taylor in Southern England (who will be implementing the first part of the project) I decided to give this job to Peter Knight.
Side note - as much as I would have liked to do a full DIY project like Andy and his Linden green beauty, neither do I (currently) possess the necessary skills, nor the workshop at this point in time. With two still single digit age kids and a busy work life the major mechanical part of the project needs to be done by prfessionals. Once our house (and my garage and working space) will be rebuilt in a couple of years the final stage and future tinkering will be done in my basement. Until then I will occasionally drop in and annoy Geoff with requests to „help, learn and participate“ until I get kicked out again…
Anyway, these are some pictures of the current state of the car. The evolving to-do list will come asap. Given that I am a 1.5h flight plus 1h drive away from my car, I will not be able to adhere to the usual monthly update requirement, but will try to do my best whenever I do have updates.
Let the fun ( and bills…) begin…
